First Response VS Clear Blue OPK

Does anyone have any feedback with Thank the FR and the CB OPK? Last cycle I used CB and found it very confusing. I had 2 days at Peak fertility and after had 7 days high fertility. That seems like an awful lot of smiley faces doesn't it?

This month I'm trying the First Response. I'm already at day 12 and still nothing. I pulled apart the test to see the actual control line and test line. Both very
faint lines which is surprising for the control line. I'm getting frustrated wondering if it's working and if I should go back to the other CB opk which is so confusing.
Any Feed Back is much Appreciated! Thank you!

Re: First Response VS Clear Blue OPK

  • I actually just logged on to ask a similar question. I recently thought that I had O but according to the blood test, I had not. I also used the Clear Blue. It is really confusing. I went straight from not fertile to peak in 12 hours. Once it registers the Peak, it would not show anything else for 2 days...

I use the more basic ClearBlue OPKs, that just give you a smiley face when you get your LH surge. I tried the kind that give you flashing smileys and so forth, but for whatever reason I didn't like them. Too complicated? Too much smiling, maybe?
Me: 38 DH: 40 TTC#1 (and likely only) since 9/13. Saw RE 5/14, SA good, AMH 2.36, FSH 7.2, estradiol 69.6 indicating good egg reserve. Using OPKs. First Letrozole cycle 6/14, a burst cyst and a BFN. Second Letrozole cycle 7/14, BFN.

Update 11/14 - had laparoscopy 10/28, good news is that my uterus and left tube look good, and they were able to drain the cyst on my left ovary. Bad news is that right tube and ovary have endo and scar tissue, so they're pretty useless.. Best news is that we finally have some answers and a path forward. Taking 7.5 mg letrozole CD 2-6 to put that good left ovary through its paces.

UPDATE 2/2015 - We switched to another fertility clinic, but fortunately we don't have to start all over. We're doing two cycles of Clomid plus IUI, if neither of those take, we'll do IVF in April, potentially with ICSI. (DH's SA has gone downhill, likely due to excessive exercise.) IUI#1 2/25/15....

I have heard more success with the ClearBlue brand, but I used the Wondfo brand to conceive both my kids, and will use it again. Here is a link:

  • The Clear Blue brand never worked well for me.  I never got a "high" reading--it just jumped right to "peak."  I had much better results with pink dye tests, although I never splurged on the brand-name ones.  I usually used CVS or Walgreen's.  FWIW, I never had much luck with the test strips (same idea as Wondfos, but CVS brand), either.  Those ALWAYS looked positive to me...

I can't find the basic CB. I'll have to keep looking for them

This is exactly what it did for me. I am going to try one more month and perhaps I will buy another and test them both to see what works for me.

  • I used the CB kit that caught the high and then peak.  The first month it worked great.  Two days for flashes and then a solid smiley face.  The next month I got 5 days of flashing smiley faces and then I ran out of tests.  I switched to wondfos the next month and had more success.  I will probably go back to the OPKs because with the wondfos I could only catch it in the afternoon and once I'm back at work, testing once in the morning will be easier.

I have used it three months and only ever get a peak reading, but the peak reading comes at the same time I usually ovulate. So I am assuming it is correct.

  • I am SO GLAD to hear someone else say they didn't have luck with the CVS brand test strips.  I am having a terrible time with them - they keep looking strongly positive (test line much darker than control) and I'm pretty sure they're not actually positive.   Off to order some Wondfos now...

  • So annoyed. I bought the CB opk and the First Response opk. Tested tonight the CB had a smiley face however the First Response didn't. I don't get it. Is one more sensitive? How accurate are these things? Happy to see a smiley but why is one positive while the other negative?
  • I'm not sure, but don't the First Response ones have to be "similar to" the control line?  Some must be "as dark as or darker than" the control.  But I think First Response can be less dark and be considered positive.  Just something to think about.....sorry if you already knew that though.  I've tried so many brands and have a hard time keep all their rules straight.
  • Hi. Yeah none of it makes sense to me. Seems like all the tests need to be on the same page! Lol. Oh well when in doubt just BD!
