DS is on an anti-seizure medicine. The doctor has increased it twice this summer, once due to his growth - the other for seizures. He has been on this medication for a year, only experiencing one side effect, he does not sweat. The last increase was about 5 weeks ago. For the last 3 weeks we have seen major behavior changes. He throws epic tantrums for no reason, one lasted 8 hours He has become obsessive. We have to hide the blocks, my cell phone, and his little tikes car. He asks for them constantly. He repeats words often, like 10 or 15 times in a row. On one bad day he said the word "castle" over 100 times in ten minutes. He has started sensory seeking. He sucks/ bites his fingers now and bites/ chews on blankets.
*Background - From 12 - 23 months he was on a different medication with was effective with controlling seizures but caused developmental delays. Once he was switched off of that medication to his current one he became a different kid. We & our pedi was sure he had autism or SPD because of delays, not smiling, afraid of crowds, not talking, watching wheels spin. We went to dev pedi at 25 mo and all of these behaviors were gone and he was determined not to have ASD or SPD. He has been developing normally since (a little speech delayed).
DS's current medication does not list behavioral side effects. I'm waiting from a call back from the dr, but the nurse said that we've only increased small amounts so I shouldn't be seeing side effects from this? He's also had a few seizures lately, I wonder if that is the culprit? He's never acted like this before though. We see his neuro on the 15th. My DH and I are at our wits end, and we are worried. This seems a little extreme for med side effects but we've been down this road before. Also - do you think it's smart to periodically check in with a dev pedi to make sure everything is alright? He was in EI class and is evaluated and getting speech and PT. In August he will be in integrated preschool.
