20 week scan baby measuring small...

Hi guys,

FTM here! At my 20 week anatomy scan, my doctor said, baby was measuring small...in the 14th percentile. She said since I have a small frame, it could be I just make small babies. My pre-pregnancy weight was 101 & I'm 5'0 tall. However, she wants to see me back in 4 weeks for another u/s to make sure baby's growth is on track. Has anyone had a similar situation?

Re: 20 week scan baby measuring small...

  • I think this is fairly common, or at least shouldn't be too concerning. I mean, someone has to be the small one. It is a good idea to follow up to make sure they stay on that curve though.

  • My DS measured small for my entire pregnancy. He was in the 10th percentile for weight and height pretty consistently. He remained there until around his 2nd birthday. He's now in the 90th%ile for height, so you may just have a small baby and that's okay! Your vagina will thank you after birth :) Mine did!

  • I too was concerned after our u/s because LO was measuring almost double the "average". I was like omg I'm going to give birth to a huge baby! My sister told me that her LO measured bigger than average at all her u/s and ended up arriving the day after her due date at 7lbs, which isn't big at all. As pp's have said, the weight they are now does not necessarily indicate how big/small they'll be at birth. As long as your dr is keeping an eye on your LO, you shouldn't worry.
  • I wouldn't worry as long as baby is growing and continuing to follow his/her growth curve.  I'm very petite (5'1", 110 lbs), and my first baby measured on track at our 20 week ultrasound but was only 5 lbs, 13 oz at birth!  My OB told me she knew I would be having a wee one based on how my uterus felt in the 3rd trimester.  She grew every check-up though and that's what counted.  She ended up being full-term but just little.  She still is (about 10-15% percentile) :-)

  • First, somebody has to be on the lower end of percentiles just like someone has to be on the upper end. Second, just because they are bigger doesn't mean they are healthier. I have watched IUGR babies come out tiny with fully developed lungs and bigger babies needing weeks of respiratory suppprt.

I am happy your doctor is monitoring you and pray your LO keeps growing appropriately.
  • My LO measured in the 16th percentile at the 20 week u/s. My doctor also wants to check growth again at 26 weeks. I also have something called a succenturiate lobe of my placenta so he wants to make sure that's not inhibiting her growth. :-/ It's worrisome, I know. Hang in there mama.

  • My sonogram tech told me during my last month with my first pregnancy that I was carrying an underweight baby. The doctors kept me on a monitor to make sure the baby's heart rate was normal and if I was experiencing early contractions. After my last visit the sono tech basically said she has no idea why the doctors had to react that way when she admited to not getting an accurate measurement. My son was born almost 7 lbs and totally healthy. This may not be the case in most women since I wasn't carrying very big I guess people just thought that my baby was going to be super to tiny. It's good that the doctors were able to double check and make sure everything would go smoothly.

On the opposite side of the spectrum my sister was induced a week early because the doc thought he was getting too big. I felt bad because she wasnt given a chance of natural delivery. She delivered him just over 8lbs. She was pretty big most of her pregnancy I guess it was all fluid related.
