Whitney or Acacia or Matilda

Haven't really posted to the name board because I feel like my opinions are already shared by others.  We are stuck, 39 weeks and 4 days and no name!  Acacia is my middle name so kind of a family name, nn Kay or Kacey.  The other two we like because they can be Winnie and Tilly/Matty.  Also, if we do Whitney, then our four initials will be N, S, E and W.  (Kind of silly, but not silly enough for most people to notice.)

Any thoughts/ideas/opinions?  Thanks!

Re: Whitney or Acacia or Matilda

  • I've always loved Whitney, but I don't think you'd need a nickname for it.

    Second best is Matilda.

I'm not a fan of Acacia nn Kacey.  Perhaps as a middle name?  Whitney Acacia?

  • Acacia is a GP of mine, but it does not need a nickname. Nickname of Kacey ruins it for me, and doesn't even sound like it works for that name.

    Love Matilda.

Thanks everyone!  Seems like Matilda is the favorite (my top, but DH is against it), somehow we always end up nicknaming everyone in our family...seems best to pick rather than have it assigned.  :-)

  • I have a friend from college who is named Whitney, and one thing that always made her roll her eyes about her own name was the HUGE potential for abusing the nicknames:  Twitney, Sh!tney, Chutney, Clitney, Twatney... you get it.

My friend has pretty thick skin about it, but it may be something to consider before picking the name.

  • If your dh is against one name, just me, but I'd automatically erase it from the options.  I love the name Whitney, guess I'm in the minority.

I agree with this.  Like the rest of the board, I prefer Mathilda, but it doesn't really matter what we think if he doesn't like it.  If you both agree on Whitney, then I think that's a solid choice.

  • Matilda is fantastic.
  • I like Acacia a lot - I tend to gravitate toward nature/botanical names - though I don't really care for the nicknames, but I don't think it needs a NN.  Matilda is also good, but I agree with PPs it should be out if your DH doesn't like it.  Whitney has a very 70s/80s vibe to me, and it's my BIL's name so I've felt weird about it as a girl name ever since I met DH and his family, although of course it's predominantly a girl name now.

  • I like Acacia the best. Whitney has always sounded kind of snotty/preppy to me (and now dated, too) and Matilda has always sounded rather homely to me, though I know it's relatively popular now.

  • I like Acacia. I also like Kay as a NN for it.
  • Matilda Acacia would be my pick but if YH is against it, you can't use it right?

I like Whitney best! I think the initial thing is kind of cool. Subtle enough for no one to notice but something neat for your family to share.
