Cloth Diapering

Reusable Wipes?

First, just wondering how many of you ladies use cloth wipes since you're already washing cloth diapers anyways?

Second, did you buy your wipes or make them...if made, what did you use?

I'm toying with starting on reusable wipes and especially making them...but also thinking of buying the thin washcloths and just using those. Any ideas?

Re: Reusable Wipes?

  • Made mine out of old receiving blankets, so they are single layer flannel. We also use the cheap baby washcloths we got at showers.

I preferred the flannel for EBF poop, but now that DS is older, I like having the more textured terry cloth for poop.

  • Cloth wipes here. We just bought the Bummis flannel ones off Amazon.com. They were the cheapest at the time I was looking. I'm not terribly handy with a sewing machine and fraying edges scare me.

  • I bought some of my wipes, bumkins brand from amazon (they were cheap, $6 for 12) and some from the Kushies outlet store, also super cheap, I think $4 for 10. The bumkins are one layer of flannel but very large and the Kushies are double layer flannel but smaller. I also use the baby wash cloths I have fromy showers, I think I got about 20 of those from differnet gift packs. I also have 6 Lil' Helper brand wipes. Those are REALLY nice, patterned, double layer, some are terry on one side and organic cotton on the other. I got them for free, I think they cost $12 for 6 wipes. I wouldn't pay that for wipes personally, but they are really nice to have!
I am going to cut up a couple of receiving blankets to make more wipes. Our dog chewed two receiving blankets up that had spit up on them (dogs are gross) so I figure I would make something useful out of the unchewed portions.

  • Best way to find out how many of us use cloth wipes would be to post a poll.

We have the double-sided wipes from GMD. The terry cloth side is nice for messier changes, and the flannel side is nice for wiping more delicate parts. You could easily make something similar.
  • Made some and bought some. The ones i bought were seconds GMD double sided cloth wipes and bum genius flannel wipes.

The ones i made i bought some fleece and some Terry cloth, cut them into squares and sewed them together.

  • I'm on the other side. Hated using my cloth wipes exclusively. I do a mix of disposable and cloth.

I use the cloth to start a big mess and finish with the disposable. Or I use the cloth to dry ds after I wipe him. I just felt like I couldn't get him clean enough on cloth alone. And they we're only single layer flannel and I'd wet them for use.

But that's my take on it I know cloth wipes work for a lot (as I can see from above).
  • going on what @florassecret‌ said, I should note that I use disposable wipes on the go. We have that Huggies diaper clutch for the diaper bag. We wet ourclotj wipes as we use them, so it's just too much to carry easily to bring Cloth wipes and something to wet them with.

I just recently started using them about 50%of the time. I made mine from bamboo fleese that I bought on amazon. Since the material dosent fray I just fit them into 8x8 squares and left the edges raw. I got 28 wipes and I think 8 4x8 strips that I use as family cloth. It cost about 16 dollars and took 15 minutes.

Edited to add the fleese has a "rough" side I use for big messes, and a super smooth side I use to "polish" ( not really rough at all, just more textured)

  • I have, apart from some samples we got from the hospital that I used in our out and about diaper bag for a little while.

I have a variety - one layer flannel bummis ones from amazon, and the others I've made: two layer flannel and ones that are flannel/terry.

I don't use the two-layer flannel ones much.  I love the flannel/terry - the terry side is great for cleaning up poop.  I then like to follow up with the one-layer flannel wipes that are easier to get in all the nooks and crannies.

  • We use the baby washcloths I got at my shower as well as some cheap washcloths from Wal-Mart. Disposable wipes are worthless in comparison, and if you're already washing diapers, what's a few washcloths? Only downside is when you get to the spraying diapers phase - spraying washcloths is sort of annoying.
  • With DD I had Grovia terry wipes (IIRC). I also had some fleece ones that were two layer that I did not like. They did not grab the poop and the layers shifted around and it was hard to get a good wipe. The Grovia ones were a good size. 8x8 I think. Baby washcloths are not thick or big enough IMO. I kept my peri bottle and filled it with water with a few drops of tea tree oil and wet the wipes as needed with that.

  • We use cheap baby washcloths, it works fantastic for us! I have a Prince Lionheart wipe warmer, I fold the wipes in half, roll them up starting at the short end. I can fit 14 wipes in the warmer at a time - 2 layers of 7. I make solution using a small squirt of Dr Bronners baby mild, a small but of coconut oil, and hot water. Pour half over the bottom layer, the other half over the top layer. I have about 30 washcloth wipes in total, so enough that I can refill the warmer while doing CD laundry and never run out.  We use disposable when we are out though.

  • We use Bumkins Flannel Wipes along with a spray bottle full of Baby Bits solution, works great!!
  • Lol @KTdidit‌ wow that is too much work.

Our wipes are thrown dry, unfolded into a basket. Spray bottle of plain water. The end.

  • Yeah I'm with @mrshudson618‌ I used to fold mine and wet them, but now I take the whole unfolded wad and wet under the sink in place into wipes container. (I prefer completely wet wipes vs a spray bottle)

Also, I wanted to add that early on I was scared that cloth wipes weren't "getting him clean enough" and we use disposable. It wasn't a huge pain, but it's definitely easier using cloth. And now I truly believe he's getting clean enough with just water!

I also keep a stack of dry wipes so I can pat dry and make sure he's completely dry before putting his diaper on.

  • I still haven't figured out wipes (but I won't have a bum that needs 'em for a few more months). It seems like using cloth wipes would be pretty easy (glad to hear you think so @YellowLily2013‌).

But I'm not too jazzed about having more things to spray off once baby's into solids. So maybe I'll use cloth wipes to start, and switch to disposable later if we need to? And using disposable on the go seems likely too...

  • I have homemade wipes (flannel cut with pinking shears, no sewing), bought Bummis or Bumkins single layer flannel and super cheap wash cloths. I hate the wash cloths, I think they are mostly polyester so the water I spray on them rolls off. I hate them so much.

I'm going to make more wipes out of the old receiving blankets my SIL gave me for free. Single layer, serged edges. (Only because I love my new serger and need an excuse to use it. ;) )

We don't spray wipes. I learned a trick from other moms on this board, wipe with the diaper to get any big mess since your already going to spray it. And then there's not much on the cloth wipe, so that just gets thrown in the pail. :)
