SS, question about cysts on brain in utero

I have a niece who is 18 years old, and is expecting a daughter in December. She found out today that the baby has 2 cysts, one in her brain and one on her cord. I'm worried because this baby is already being brought into a less than ideal situation, what does this mean for the baby? Are there developmental implications? Does a cyst on the cord compromise blood flow and cause any issues? This would be hard for mature adults to deal with, and my niece is a very immature 18 with a history of major head trauma, can be unstable at times. I'm concerned about her emotional state if she is told that her baby is going to have special needs. Thank you for your help in advance, I know you ladies are so knowledgable and very supportive.

Re: SS, question about cysts on brain in utero

  • Is the brain cyst a choroid plexus cyst? Many of these mean nothing and resolve by the next ultrasound.

  • I don't have any real info to share but my cousin's baby had the same thing and it resolved itself by the next scan.
  • The choroid plexus brain cysts typically resolve by term, and I haven't heard any problems with umbilical cord cysts either.  She should follow up with MFM to be sure though, get their opinion.

  • Thanks ladies, that is good news to hear, I'm hoping that is the case

  • It probably all depends on the cysts. My kiddos have had each of these.
DD has a Blake's Pouch Cyst that is often tied to serious syndromes, but she is fortunate and does not have those, nor does she suffer any problems from the cyst. Right now it is just an extra 'space' in her brain. (We did not 100% know at birth if she would be affected by it)
DS had an umbilical cord cyst at dating ultrasound but it resolved itself early on. Drs told me if umbilical cord cysts are found very early on, they rarely develop into anything.
I hope things turn out similarly for your niece!
