Trying to Get Pregnant

Late ovulation?

So with DS my due date was moved 8 days forward because my doctor told me I ovulate late. This was 3 years ago. H and I have been ttc for 3 months now. I have done the OPK's in this time. This month is the first month I continued to test late and found I finally got a surge on CD25. I imagine this means I O'd on the 27th. This is right on track with how things happened with DS. I had a successful pregnancy at that time, but the more I really read about what it means with late O'ing the more I worry with this one. DS wasnt planned so that I'm trying and really wanting another baby asap, its nerve wrecking. Anyone else in the same boat? I keep reading Late ovulation causes a "bad egg" and if I am set to start Aug 5 (32 days cycles) I worry its not enough time for it to implant. I just dont want DS to be a miracle and not being able to have another. I know its in God's time, but I wonder how common this is.

Re: Late ovulation?

  • People ovulate on different days.  It's never "late" as it's rare that anyone ovulates on the exact same day every month.

What you are reading about as "late ovulation" and it being more difficult to get pregnant is probably actually a just short LP (the time between your ovulation and your period).  An egg needs 7-10 days to implant, so if your LPs are regularly less than 10 days, it will make it more difficult to get pregnant.

FYI OPKs only predict ovulation, they do not confirm it.  You should start tracking BBT so that you will actually know when you ovulated.  Day 25 isn't bad at all.  I have ovulated on days 20 and 19 my last two cycles.  Your cycles are likely just longer than the "standard" 28 day cycle.

If you start confirming you ovulation using BBT for a few cycles and notice that you've had 3 straight cycles with less than 10 day LPs, i'd suggest calling your doctor.  But you are perfectly capable of getting pregnant...it's already happened once, after all.

  • If temping is the only way to know when you ovulated, what is the use of OPK's? I also have an exact 32 day cycle every month which is how I know when I'd start in August. I have been tracking that for months now. I just didnt know if late ovulation is bad when TTC.
  • Thank you so much. I appreciate your words of encouragement.

CD25 is not "late" for ovulation.  It might just be your normal and that's okay.  Not everyone is this textbook, CD14 average for everything.  You're ovulating and cycling - you're fine.

There are women on this site who have gotten pregnant and had healthy babies after ovulating in the CD40s or CD50s.  Anecdotes, sure - but it's not unheard of.

Just relax.  Have sex.  Have fun.  Have a drink :-)

  • Definitely need to start temping! This will ensure you actually do ovulate on a regular basis (OPK's do not mean that you ovulate, it just confirms a surge in the FSH hormone).

The OPK's tell you when you have a surge, therefore, you know it's time to hop in the sack, because it indicates you are most fertile at that time. Temping will CONFIRM ovulation. Like I said, you could have a surge, but not even be ovulating. You won't know unless you temp. It will give you a better idea of the pattern in which you ovulate. For example, after temping for 1.5 years, I know I generally O around day 20 or 21.

  • Read the newbie blog.

OPKs test for a hormone that appears in urine when the ovary is ramping up to release an egg.  Some women can never turn an OPK positive, but they still ovulate.  Some women will get multiple batches of positive OPKs in one cycle even though they only ovulate once.  Some women see positives on one brand of OPK but not on others.  A positive OPK just tells you that at SOME POINT in the next 48 hours you MIGHT ovulate...it doesn't necessarily mean that you did.

If you were tracking BBT you would see clear sustained higher temperatures after ovulation through the end of yoyr LP, and then they would drop again when you got your period (or stay high if you are pregnant).

Your LP can vary by a few days each month, so just because your cycle is always 32 days doesn't mean that you always ovulate on the same day each cycle.  again, all of this information can be found in the newbie blog link at the top of this board.  read it.

Ancedote time. I got my positive OPK this month on CD 18 and didn't O until CD 22 - which I know because I temp. You can have more than one positive OPK each month and just because you get a positive, doesn't mean you will O. You can even get more than one surge (multiple positives at different points in your cycle).

I've not heard about bad eggs being produced by O'ing late, there are many medical reasons why someone would be producing "bad eggs".

Best of luck to you, as long as you're ovulating, you can get pregnant.

  • My son too was a "surprise" in that we just stopped preventing and it happened pretty fast. I too had my due date moved back 7 days, and now I know that's because I don't O on "typical" (I use that term loosely) day 14, I actually O around day 20.

Temping will also confirm how long your luteal phase is, which is important. Like PP said, a luteal phase less than 10 days can make becoming pregnant a bit more difficult, but not impossible.

Hang in there, it can take a healthy couple under 35 up to a year to get pg.
