GTT Rant

After getting sick at Quest for my 1 hour test on thursday I got a call today that I have to go back for the 3 hour. I am really annoyed, yet knew this was going to happen. I had to do the 3 hour with DS1 and passed with flying colors after failing by a couple points on the 1hr. Again I only failed by 2 points and I have to go back for the 3hour. I really want to just tell the doc to shove it. I know it will come back fine. I am annoyed that they wouldn't work with me on doing an A1C because I live on a paleo style diet. After drinking the syrup the other day I vommitted twice, was so dizzy I couldn't take it. I was Hot, and restless. It was the worst hour of my life, I wasn't on a Paleo diet back with DS1 so it wasn't quite as bad the first time around, but the 3hour I thought I was going to die. I am really not looking forward to the 3hour, but I have it at 6:45am this thursday and am hoping it goes better. I told my husband if I get as sick this time as I did last week he is calling in sick to work to take care of our son, because it was awful. Anyone else get horribly sick from their GTT

Re: GTT Rant

  • Oh no! So sorry to hear that.

I didn't feel sick, but I was really sweaty and shivering...also felt like I was on stimulants. It wasn't a good feeling, but wasn't sick like you.

Good luck, and yeah, have your hubby help out.
Maybe ask doctor about an alternative?

  • Sorry! The GTT is the worst!

I failed my 1 hour, fasted for my 3 hour GTT on Saturday just to have them tell me they were running behind and I would have to come back another day.  I fasted for 14 hours and had an appointment!!! The lady couldn't understand why I was crying.  I said, "I am pregnant and hungry, and now you tell me I have to fast and come back a different time!" She said you should come during the week, we aren't as busy.  Just because I am pregnant doesn't mean I don't have to go to work!!

  • I echo what @theresat858 suggested: finger pricks after meals for a week. I'm doing this right now and it's very easy and far superior to drinking that horrible stuff, IMO. Sorry you got so sick! Just to warn you, if you're not already aware of this: the 3-hour test has TWICE the glucose in the drink as the 1-hour test.

    Take care, mama.

  • It's your body, you have the final say
in your treatment. If you're serious about not taking it, I'd tell the dr you're happy to act as If the test is positive and track your levels to manage your blood sugar.

  • I asked about the finger pricks and they won't go for it. omg I didn't remember that from last time. I Dont know if I could do twice the amount of the drink. I also had the sweatiness and shivering. Our office does NSTs two times a week if you have GD which is not covered by my insurance unless it is confirmed with the gtt. I am about to cry just thinking about the 3 hour. what would happen if I just refused it all together?

  • Yeah I honestly have tried every excuse in the book to get out of it. I am just considering not going. What can they do if I don't go have it done? I definitely.don't want to go alone I had a friend go with me last time I am hoping my husband can pull off going with me this time.

  • I'm Paleo too!  I just didn't feel right after I drank it.  That sour stomach feeling like I had too much sugar (shocker!).  My dr. is on board with me being Paleo, and he, in general, doesn't put a whole lot of stock in the 1 hour test but he has to do it for his insurance.  I've passed it both times easily, but I'm not low carb, and I certainly don't limit my fruit when I'm pregnant, and I just haven't had to deal with insulin resistance in general.  I went Paleo 3 years ago to help with amenorrhea (absence of a monthly cycle), and I was able to conceive my son after years of IF treatments and a standard diet.

In the event that someone fails the 1 hour, my dr. first orders them to begin testing their blood sugars 4 times a day, after each meal and upon waking, I think.  The 3 hour test isn't usually ordered until a week later anyway, so he gets a good idea of what his patients' blood sugars are doing with their regular diet before the 3 hour test.  If the numbers on the patient's regular diet look fine, then he doesn't have them do the 3 hour test, but I believe he does have them check their sugars for a few more weeks to make sure everything looks okay.  He went through all of this with me when I was Paleo with my first pregnancy because I was afraid I'd get a false positive.  Also, he doesn't ask his patients to fast before the test, and I make sure to eat a high fat and protein breakfast before my test, 2 eggs fried in the grease of 3 strips of bacon before the last one, and my blood sugar was 82.

Get a glucometer and start checking your numbers now on your regular diet, or, just tell your dr. you'd prefer to just assume you have GD, get the diet counseling, and begin monitoring your numbers.  I believe thepaleomom.com did this with one of her pregnancies because she didn't want to take the 3 hour test.  If you're eating a nutrient dense Paleo diet, then you're essentially doing what you should be with GD, and you'd just have to start checking your numbers.  There are a few Paleo View Podcast episodes that talk about this, and I found them very informative.

  • Thank you everyone for your input. I unfortunately ended up caving and just went today for the 3 hour. I am certain i will pass it as I did with my first pregnancy. Unfortunately my docs office doesn't just do the typical meet with a nutritionist and check your sugars with meals. They do NSTs two times a week as well. This is why I ended up caving. I travel too much for work to do 2 appointments a week for something I know I don't have. Thankfully this is the last time I have to go through with this. I love my doctors dearly and I have been through a lot with them. I just couldn't believe this was something they wouldn't work with me on. But I guess 1 negative out of a million positives isn't too bad. Again thank you all for your support in my ranting and being upset over a silly test.

  • I had my 3 hour test last week and I was very nervous about getting sick, so I talked with my doctor, she prescribed me zofran to take right before the test and assured me it wouldn't mess with my results. I took it, and aside from being a little shaky the first hour from the sugar, I did okay. I think it helped me, maybe an option for you?
  • Didn't get sick, but I'm really sorry you have to do it :0(

Hey, you made the best decision for you and your baby.  Don't feel bad about that!  Check on the Zofran thing, that sounds like a good option.  Good Luck!

  • I took Zofran with me but I didn't think to take it before I drank the stuff. It didn't make me vomit today luckily, but it did at the 1 hour. I think why it made me sick at the 1 hour was because I had eaten shortly before the test. This time around I had to fast.
