how many to transfer?

i had my first IVF consult last week. my doctor said that he recommended transferring only one embryo per IVF cycle. his reasoning is that you can always transfer the other embryo next time without risking multiples. has anyone else received a recommendation to transfer only 1? i don't know how i feel about it.

  • The doctor I go to also only recommends one transfer.  They even go as far as give financial incentives to only do a single transfer.

  • me!  I am not doing IVF (yet) but the RE said that if I did not want multiples then the safest bet was to do IVF and xfer just 1.

I've been thinking a lot about this.  My doctor wants us to transfer 2 (if with my diagnosis we're lucky to even get have that many).  DH wants to follow the doctors suggestion but part of me wants to see how many viable eggs we have after ER and our PGS testing.  If we get 3+ viable eggs I might only transfer one this first time.

  • I have a similar dilemma. I had IVF #1 almost 2 years ago where they transferred 2 embryos. I was pregnant with twins but lost one of my babies in between weeks 9 & 10. This time around for my FET they only want to transfer 1. While I'm not looking for twins, I know what happened the last time and it makes me want to transfer the remaining 2 we have frozen to hope that we will at least carry one baby to term. I have a couple of hurdles to jump over before this but I feel your struggle with the decision. It's a hard one to make!

  • A lot of clinics recommend an ESET, trust the Dr, if they are recommending ESET, it's probably because they have a good success rate with that protocol.

  • Our clinic recommends the transfer of just one. We had two blasts and my husband and I decided to transfer both. After being shown the numbers that it increases the chance of multiples by 40% I felt like I wanted to "be sure" atleast one took. Also, I didnt want to make the decision of what to do with the other if the original took and the other was frozen. Its a personal preference I think. They just say one because of mulitples.
  • My RE pretty much leaves the ball in our court.  We transferred two during our first IVF, and only DD stuck.  Transferred two again last September, twin pregnancy, miscarriage.  Transferred two again in March, BFN.

DH and I are willing to accept the responsibility for multiples if it happens (we were super excited last year before the miscarriage) but it really is a personal preference.
