Adhesions, anyone?

I posted a little while ago about how when I went in for a recent hysteroscopy at my RE's office, and he said he saw tissue in my uterus that would need to be removed. (He also found an endometrioma on one of my ovaries, which he wanted to leave alone).  During the D&C, my doc said something about the tissue in my ute being retained product from my D&C on May 1. Now I just got the call from my insurance company for pre-authorization for the surgery to remove the tissue, and they described the procedure as "lysis of adhesions." From what I understand, adhesions=scar tissue.

Has anybody else here had surgery to have adhesions removed who is willing to share their experience?

Re: Adhesions, anyone?

  • Ugh, I'm sorry you found all that out. Going into surgery always sucks even if it's to make things better in the long run. I had this surgery back in April. The cause of my scar tissue and adhesions was unknown but she said it was likely from an infection I didn't know I had. The surgery was not too bad. She did it laproscopicly. One small incision in the belly button and one on each side just inside my hip bone. The worst part was the gas the fill your abdomen up with. It made my diaphragm and shoulders ache really badly but laying flat on my back helped a lot. My RE said it was because the gas pushes your organs up and makes them push against stuff they are not supposed to. That was mostly gone after the first day. I was a little tired and sore for a couple of days but all in all not a bad recovery. They removed a whole bunch of adhesions and a couple of polyps. Good luck and keep us posted!!

I've had adhesions removed back in Sept 2011 and Feb 2014.  Basically, @bananappeal145 described exactly what I dealt with.  The gas is awful, so I suggest stocking up on some gas X before you go in.  My adhesions this year were from my c-section as well as from my endometriosis... oh joy.  Give yourself 10 days to really recover from it.  *hugs*
Do you work outside the home? If so, how many days did you take off?

  • I'm having my adhesions removed in a couple of weeks. Mine were caused by my csection and retained placenta ( X( ). Mine is being done by a hysteroscopy thankfully because the damage wasn't that bad (or so they tell me). Good luck to you!

  • I felt just off for about 7-10 days. Depends on what kind of job you have. No heavy lifting after surgery but you should be OK for a desk job after 3 or 4 days.

  • I don't have any advice for you but wanted to jump in and just say how sorry I am that you have to go through this.  Does your doc think this is all from your last loss?

I do, but I'm a college professor, so... my schedule is a little different as I only have to be on campus two days a week.  See if your doctor can work with you to schedule over a long weekend.  I would definitely plan on at least a week off, depending on how good your doctor is.  I had my two laps done by two different doctors.  I healed a lot faster from my second one, even though I had my right ovary and tube removed, and I chalk that up to the skill of my surgeon.

Our admin asst recently had a lap done, and she only planned on taking a long weekend to have it done... she ended up being out over a week.  It truly sucks, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
I do think you have to plan for it taking a bit to heal and hope for the best. Sorry you are going through this.

Side note, what do you teach? I am also a college prof (biology)
