Hummus?

What is the verdict, should you have it while pregnant? I have read mixed research. I am looking for healthier alternatives (instead of ranch to dip veggies in, I thought hummus might be better until I looked it up.) Now I am more confused :o( I will be going to my OB in two weeks and I figured I could wait till then but just thought I would see what you ladies thought!

Re: Hummus?

  • I just polished off a tub with a bag of pretzels.

  • There were a couple that prepacked hummus that were recalled.  If possible maybe make it yourself so that you don't have to worry recall potential.

  • Many a tubs of hummus have been eaten in my house the last few months. I see no reason for it to be an issue?!

I read that the tahini in it isn't good for pregnant women. I was going to make my own but I don't have the time right now.

ETA: I would love to make my own but right now it would just be easier to pick up a tub from the store
  • Besides, not all hummus has tahini in it!
  • That's what I thought! I couldn't understand it! It's why I posted it! I didn't want to avoid it when it seemed silly! But seriously like 5 sites I read said that tahini wasn't good! I can't remember what sites they were in particular but I want to say one was baby center (which was a pretty good source of info for me with my first pregnancy)
  • @Rileymom1 do you know what particular brands? I was going to make some without it but I just don't have the time right now :o(
  • It's bc garbanzo beans have estrogen like properties, same with soy. I think as long as you don't enter a hummus eating contest, you're fine.

  • @rshamos I don't plan on doing that any time soon :o) but maybe once a week or so.
  • @Amandak2012‌ have you ever seen Don't Mess With The Zohan? I think that's too much hummus. ;)

  • What I read on pregnancy and hummus was the same with basically every other refrigerated food. Just make sure it stays refrigerated and you don't eat it past the sell by date or there's an increased risk of bacteria. So, basically just follow all of the same food rules you probably did before you were pregnant, and you and your baby should be fine.
