Please excuse the odd question, but... I have NEVER used a pad in my life! What would be a good brand to get for after the baby??? I've only ever used tampons and I know that's not recommended for postpartum bleeding.
Take some of the ones they have at the hospital home with you. I used Always Overnights with wings for about a week and then the bleeding slowed down enough to get something smaller.

Clomid/Femara cycle #1 - 6/10 = BFN
Clomid/Femara cycle #2 - 7/10 = BFP #1 - Missed miscarriage 9/2/10
11/12 - BFP #2 - 11/22 - m/c
5/1/11 - BFP #3 - Pre-eclampsia, IUGR & bed rest from 32w. DD born via induction 1/4/12.
The biggest ones you can find. I actually bought depends for the first few days LOL. If you can find natural cotton ones (still disposable though) go with those! Sometimes certain brands of pads can give you chemical burn.

This. I've heard to not use the infinicel ones (I think that's what they were called) because if you have stitches, they can stick. I used the hospital 'diapers' for a couple of days, then the always overnights until into the second week. Then I was able to switch to a regular flow pad (Always with wings are my preference) for the remaining time.
The Always Infinity are horrible. I did not attempt to use them PP, but tried them when we were TTC and they left little bits of styrofoam looking stuff all over me. They're nice and thin, but I will never buy them again.

That's crazy cause I loved the always infinity. They are really absorbent and thin. Definitely stock up from the hospital first. That got me through the first week of the really really heavy bleeding.
My hospital sent me home with these crazy huge thick pads that were wonderful for the first few days. Then I switched to Always Infiniti overnight with wings.
I was actually in depends for the first week or so; it wasn't the bleeding that the big issue, it was the lack of bladder control. Once I got better at not peeing on myself, I switched to always infinity.
I actually put witch hazel and aloe vera gel on the diapers and froze them. Not only did it feel good to the stitches (I tore) but it was summer so the cool felt good in general.
I'm using depends for this reason too! The first night home with my daughter I got up to go pee and literally peed myself all the way down my stairs because I couldn't control my bladder. I was horrified! Hahaha
I like the always affinity with wings. I wore depends diapers with 2 pads. Yes the bleeding was serious. Oh and if you want to be pampered put a few tucks hemmoroids pads lined on the maxi pads. It's cool and refreshing.
Oh my gosh, how did I never know that the bleeding could be this bad? ( this is my first). I guess this isn't one of those topics covered in pregnancy books. How long do you bleed like this? (excuse my ignorance.)
I never liked Always brand because they have like a plasticky layer that I find sticks to my skin. (My skins kind of sensitive so maybe it's just me?) but I imagine the sticking would be very uncomfortable, especially if you need stitches.. I used to wear Stayfree overnights, so I'm going with those.
You can ask the hospital for extras of the pads they give you. Overnight pads are usually the biggest you can find at the store. I prefer the Always Ultra-Thin overnights with wings. I've also tried cheaper store-brand knock-offs of Always overnights but they were awful.

You also bleed full front to back on the pad because it comes out is clumps
So while really thin pads are nice, the first few days you need lots of coverage.
I bled more with #1 than #2 so it isn't always horrible but you never know
