DH and I are planning on moving to PA in a little less than a year. We are headed down in a few weeks to scout locations. We will need to be in the Philly area because I will be working in Wayne. DH is a native of NYC and therefore wants to live in the city but I would rather find a place with a yard and garage. We will most likely rent to start. DH doesn't have a job there yet but shouldn't have a problem finding something. We have some good connections there.
Anyway does anybody have suggestions as to where we should be looking? I would love to find a place that can satisfy both of us, a city feel but a yard for LO and dog to play in.
Re: PA Bumpies
It depends what you like but my recommendation would be to live in one of the inner suburbs. The regional rail system makes it easy to get into the city for work or play. We live in Glenside, Montgomery County and I work in the city. Takes me 15 minutes on the train, and I don't have to worry about gas or parking.
The Glenside, Abington, jenkintown, willow grove area is pretty popular and has very good public schools and other amenities (malls, restaurants, entertainment, etc). You can get a nice 3 bed/1-2 bath house with a decent yard for about $250-300k.
I also know a lot of people who live in upper Darby, Bryan Mawr, Drexel hill, Ardmore area but I don't know a lot about the housing market or schools there.
If you really want to live in the city (like near downtown-- Philadelphia proper is HUGE) there are some up and coming areas where you can get a pretty good deal on a home -- fishtown, northern liberties, point breeze are all in the process of gentrification and boast a lot of young families.
Stay away from north and west Philadelphia. They are baaaaad news.
Let me know if you have any questions. Happy to help. Let us know when you get here so you can join out local bumpie group!
