1st Trimester

Blood test.

I'm not sure if this is the norm or not. I had a positive pregnancy test and called my new Dr. They scheduled me an appointment the following week. They did an intravaginal ultrasound to determine how far along I am. I was 7 weeks. She said everything looked normal. I am going to my second appointment at 10 weeks. I am getting a blood test done. This test is to test for any extra chromosome in baby and also can tell me sex of the baby. Results will be in 1 week. I am a healthy no risk patient. Has anybody else done this blood test? I'm starting to get nervous and excited about it. I hope my baby is healthy and I'm very excited to know what I am having!

  • My doctor nonchalantly told me about it. This was my first time seeing this dr. He is very nice. I am 25 and this is my second pregnancy. I have a healthy 5 year old boy and had absolutely no problems with my first pregnancy. And no miscarriage before. After leaving the appointment I thought wow they do things differently now. I get this test on Wednesday. I googled the test and it says mostly for high risk. They told me everything is normal at the appointment.
  • I didn't ask why. It sounded routine.
  • That's what my sister said. I'm going to call my insurance tomorrow. I have a high deductible insurance plan. I think I've read around 300 or so dollars. That doesn't matter to me as long as it's not thousands. I'm going to meet my deductible anyway with the dr visits and the delivery of the baby.

  • Thank you for the tips. I will call my insurance tomorrow. Emmy by nonchalant I meant talking about it in a way that didn't raise any concern. He explained to me about the test, and what it tests for. I asked questions about the test and he told me it's accurate and safe. He is a very nice doctor and took his time. I said sounds good. Aditigirl I didn't ask why because it would be silly to me. They already told me the baby looks normal. And I gave them my history and answered all the questions. Like I said I thought it sounded like a normal test. What Emmy said makes sense, it may be expensive. It's up to me to call my insurance. Like I said if it's a few hundred dollars that's fine. If it's thousands maybe not.

  • I would rather have a noninvasive test to see if my child has downs and yes I am excited to know the sex of my baby. Do you know what a deductible is? I pay 100 percent out of pocket until I meet x amount of dollars. I already have to pay 40 dollars for each time I go into the doctor. So it doesn't matter if it's covered or not. I will pay 100 percent out of pocket anyway until I meet a certain amount and then my insurance will pick up a percentage of my bill until I reach another dollar amount and then my insurance will pay 100 percent. So yes I have to dish out a lot of money anyway. Like I said a few hundred not a big deal a few thousand is a big deal.

  • The only thing that helps is if it is considered preventive care. Which I'm unclear of. That's why I am calling my insurance tomorrow.

  • You may be right. I will ask them the price of other tests too. :) thanks for the suggestion.

  • Oh wow! That is a lot. He did not say specifically which test all he said was a blood one. I need to call the office and see which test it is, where they are sending the lab work.
  • I had the harmony done. Insurance did not cover it. $600. Good luck with that if it's not needed...

  • I'm AMA, but also in Canada. The only standard testing they offer that gives you that kind of accuracy for abnormalities is amnio or cvs. I'm doing the blood screening and NT scan but declining the invasive tests . I kind of wish they offered the more accurate blood tests here. At least if you come back with a high probability, you're not left waiting on tenterhooks until D-day....

  • The people who are saying I am willing to dish out money to know the sex right now? First of all I didn't know this test existed. I didn't ask for it. I'm done on this stupid baby bump website. Get your head out of your asses. All that is on here is negativity and bashing. This is by no means a support page. The only positive things I have seen on here is if you lost your baby due to a miscarriage. This app is deleting on my phone. Right meow? Grow the hell up.

  • So you agreed to take a test that you don't even know the name of? Yeah...I would have asked way more questions, found out if my insurance covered the test and if it was necessary before I would agree to that. I don't see any need for extra tests is you are low risk. Just my opinion though.
  • Holy over reaction... :|

  • I don't see why there is an issue here. It's a blood test. A simple prick of a needle. And if she wants to pay for it, who cares? She was just asking if anyone knew about the test. If she chooses to have some blood work done and pay for it with her own money then let her do it. Yikes. Not like she is agreeing to an unnecessary amnio or something that puts her baby at risk. Its a tube of blood.

  • It is irresponsible to tell someone to go ahead with some random blood test. If she doesn't even know what the heck she's getting tested for, how is it a good idea for us to endorse it?

    Pregnancy 101: CTFD
Pregnancy 102 : ask your doctor to explain things thoroughly. Ask again or keep asking if you don't understand. Don't worry if the doctor might think you are stupid. What is more dumb is to potentially pay out of pocket for a test you don't even know what it is?

Also, genetic testing is NOT cheap. So, you could be looking at 300 to 1000 dollars out of pocket if your doc just has you initial next to something & you don't even know what it is.

    Be smart.
    Inform yourself.
