My partner and I have recently found out we are expecting. I have always been set on the idea of having a junior, and thankfully she has agreed that if it is a boy we can name him AronJr. However we are at odds for a name if it is a girl.
A couple years back, just innocently thinking of names for our future kids, we came up and thought of the name for a girl of Niaara, or Niaarah (pronounced Nee-Air-Uh). I took it and ran with it, and now have my mind set on it, while my girlfriend says she no longer likes it. Her name is Nia and my name is Aron, so I thought that would be a nice way to combine our names. However, she wants a more traditional name and one with a meaning. Niara is a name close in spelling that actually has meaning.
What do you think about combining our names like that?
I think your partner has the right idea. I'm not a huge fan of Niara either, but it is much improved by removing the unnecessary extra letters. If she doesn't like it anymore, go back to the drawing board.
You should both love the name you pick, so I would say to take a look at other names to see if there are any that you like better. Or, if you still wanted to try to name a girl after you both, maybe try a combination from both of your first names and middle names (female variations of yours). For example, if your middle name was Daniel, you could use Danielle Nia.
Honestly I think its your opinion that making up a name isn't cool, thats not a fact. I have many relatives and friends that have made up names and they love their names. Besides, every name has been made up at some point.
And actually Niara has more of a Swahili background from my research. But thanks for your input!
I kind of love Niara, but my opinion is secondary to the actual parent of the baby's opinion and if your GF doesn't love it, then it's probably a no-go.
I also love Aria and Mila from your list. Other names that popped into my mind are Nina, Ariel, and Nora.
I really don't like any version of this. It's not a pretty name nor is it intuitively pronounced. Your child will be their own person and won't appreciate your "clever" idea once no one knows how to spell or say her name. Scrap that idea and choose a real name.

I don't like smoosh names.
If a boy is definitely going to be named after you, your GF should get veto power over your girl name, it's only fair.
