Feeding question - purees

DD gets cereal in the morning and a fruit or vegetable around dinner time. She has had about 10 different foods. This may be a silly question but I honestly don't know. It seems silly to call the ped about this. Can I/Should I feed her a fruit and vegetable at the same time at dinner? When introducing new foods we have do them from 5 days to a week. I haven't mixed anything yet. I make all of the purees myself. Our ped gave us a handout at our last appointment and we are feeding DD exactly what she wants us too, amount wise.

Re: Feeding question - purees

  • Hi Mama, I found introducing veggies first was better because once he got a taste for the sweet stuff, I didn't want him to turn away the veggies. I give him a fruit at breakfast, and a veggie at night. Sometimes the veggie at night left him looking for more, and I gave him some pears, or something after. He has not been overly gassy, and some days eats more than others. When I ran out of the veggie, then offered a fruit with a different texture, he was hesitant at first even though he usually loves it. He acted like he didn't like it, but was just confused, took a few more bites, then remembered he loved it, lol!

  • Absolutely. I used to mix them so that she wasn't as sweet but I always offered the veggies first. I think it was around 8 months when I also started adding spices to her cereal. Not sure if it made a difference or not but we have a great eater.

  • Thanks. I haven't mixed anything yet. I meant give the veggie then fruit. She gets either/or right now, not both. She has never refused any of the foods I have made.

  • Yes, you can mix fruits and veggies (if they're ones that have already been introduced).  Just for ideas, Gerber makes apple/squash, pear/green bean, and I think carrot/mango.  P loved the apple/squash combo.
  • Are you waiting 5 days because of particular allergy concerns? For most kids, that's not necessary.

For things she's had before, yes, it's fine to offer more than one at a meal time.

As for amount, I would let baby dictate how much to eat, not your pediatrician.
She has had about 10 foods, maybe more. No problems with allergies. I was doing that because the ped said so.

The most DD has taken were two jars. I have the baby bullet jars. Sometimes she doesn't even eat one.

I'm sure I will start mixing soon. I was just trying to get as many plain things as possible.

  • We do BLW so it's a bit different but I try to give him a fruit, a veggie, a protein and a grain (or sometimes cheese) at the same time and let him pick what he wants. He almost always eats the fruit first, then samples the rest of the stuff. Then sometimes he just crams things in his mouth indiscriminately :-D

Yeah babies pretty much love fruit because it's sweet. I've even found he likes citrus fruits including grapefruit. He'll make a face, but then he continues eating it. So I don't think the face means 'I don't like it' I think it just means 'wow this is not what I expected!'.

If you're worried about allergies I'd stay away from the red berries (strawberries, raspberries, etc.) until later because they can be allergy triggers. But blueberries are pretty safe as are pears, plums and peaches. Blueberries you can just mash up with a spoon, they don't have to be pureed until smooth. Same with raspberries if you go there. Super easy snack.

  • Thanks, I'm going to start by giving her one veggie and one fruit, then work into mixing things.
