Cloth Diapering

Newbie w/Questions

Hi All,

I've lurked a little here and between now and the end of the year I will probably start spending a lot more time lurking and posting! Hopefully someday helping other CD moms :-) I'm a FTM due 11/7 and DH and I are pretty excited to try CDing. For the most part we are looking to do prefolds with some PLU covers and a few wool covers and I've reached a point where I could use some advice/feedback. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer!

And hopefully I'm not stepping on any toes by jumping in with questions...

Prefolds- I've been leaning towards Thirsties Duo Hemp Prefolds or Bummies Organic Cotton Prefolds thinking we can just stock up on the two main sizes and save some money. Will we be missing out or have more potential issues than if we went with GMDs Cloth-eez which have 6 sizes and insanely good reviews? Or could I get away with GMDs in Small (10-15lbs) and Medium (15-29lbs)?

Covers-
I'm trying to find at least 2-3 wool diaper covers that snap or velcro. So far I've only found two options on Green Mountian Diapers for $37 or $47, are there other options/sites?
Then for the rest I've mostly looked at Thirsties Duo Wraps/Covers and Bummies but really prefer the color options of the Thirsties. My concern/question is, how good are the Thirsties at fitting chunky or skinny babies? Are there other comparable brands that are better at fitting any body type?

Wipes- Just started looking and so far I've only found one brand that doesn't have synthetics, Bummies. Anyone know of other brands? Am I okay sticking with cotton and skipping hemp or bamboo for wipes?

Re: Newbie w/Questions

  • In my opinion the Bummis prefolds are very expensive compared to other brands that offer bamboo or organic cotton prefolds. Imagine has "smart fit" prefolds in bamboo that are very reasonably priced and come in 3, maybe 4 sizes, so I think you could get away with only 2 sizes, although they would be bulky on a newborn. I personally prefer flats on a newborn. Way trimmer, cheaper and will last you until PLing, so a great investment over newborn prefolds.
I suggest just worrying about getting the first size prefolds, even if you do newborn or small size, you won't need prefolds for the 16-29lbs range for at least a few months so you can decide what you like (cotton or bboo, etc.) Before getting g your next step.
For wiped I have Kushies, Bumkins and Lil' Helper. All are 100% cotton, and work great. For wipes I personally wouldn't invest in bamboo - toe that's overkill. A lot of our "wipes" are actually baby wash cloths because we got a ton of those as gifts at my baby shower. That is something like receiving blankets that everyone buys you a of because they are handy.

I love my Thirties cover, it's one I reach for a lot. I have a skinny guy and my size 1 fit from birth basically.

  • I'm not much help on the prefolds, but FWIW we have GMD and I like them a lot. I have about half cotton and half bamboo. I love the bamboo ones. We got NB & small so far. You may be able to skip the NB or just get NB and mediums? But the bigger size would be bulky until your LO grows into it.

For covers we really like the thirsties. I also had 3 rumparooz NB covers which I liked a lot.

DS is 50% for weight and 75% for height so fairly average but a little more towards long & skinny.

  • Bummis prefolds are about the most expensive out there, but no better in quality. I second to look at imagine/nickis prefolds.
We have used three sizes, but could get by without the nb if necessary. I would use the money you could save with cheaper prefolds to get more sizes. Not necessary, but really nice to have.

Thirsties were good when my son was really long and skinny at first, but also later in his really fat pre crawling stage.
However, I got rid of all my thirsties in favor of assunta covers. Similar two size system, Way cheaper, but better quality IMO.

  • I would not buy Bummis prefolds - they are extremely expensive and aren't any better than anything else out there. If you want to use just 2 sizes, I would get OsoCozy size 1 prefolds (longer than GMD nb, but narrower than GMD small) and GMD medium. Most people can use Mediums up until training. (I couldn't with DD due to absorbency issues, but that is rare).

Thirsties covers fit a wide variety of body types. They are great covers. The Duo size 2 covers have fit my kiddo for nearly 2 years at this point - though I thought for sure she would have outgrown them by now!

Cotton flannel wipes are fine. I got mine off etsy from the store Tender Bottoms and they've been great.
