Some of us have had the complete genetic screening which includes a DNA analysis. It's done to check for trisomies, but it also can determine the sex of the baby. Moms who fall into a high risk category generally have the option to have this done, though there are some exceptions.
Other people have gone for elective ultrasounds or have gotten guesses at 12-14 week ultrasounds. I personally wouldn't trust the results from a scan that early, but some people do.
you can tell the sex of the baby on u/s past 16w or so, but most doctors prefer to do the anatomy scan around 20w so it's easier to see everything they need to check out. my OB wouldn't even schedule mine a few days early so that we could come in on a day SO already had PTO (when i'd be 19w2d); it HAD to be 20w or later. (note: i'm not complaining...SO is just taking another day off for it. i want it done when my OB is most confident in seeing what he needs to see, i just thought i'd ask since SO already had the day off, and that's what the OB told me.)
ETA: you can tell the sex of the baby *for sure* past 16w. sometimes you can tell earlier than that, depending on the quality of the machine and how good the tech is, lol.

I'm jealous of all the early a/s. My dr won't schedule mine until I'm 22 weeks. Hoping I get an ultrasound next week (he's been doing one each appointment instead of the doppler) and I'll ask him to guess. I'll be a little over 16 weeks
Trenton Elijah born three weeks early due to pre-e on April 14, 2011. Weighing 6lbs 6.3oz, 18 inches long.
Cameron Jacob (CJ) came early @ 25w4d on November 16, 2012 due to placenta abruption and incompetent cervix . Weighing 1lb 15.5oz, 14 inches long.
I'm due jan 19. I will find out at my 20 week a/s after Labor Day. I'm low risk so all the elective screening would have been oop. So we decided not to do the screening
I'm patient waiting til 20 weeks. I did it with my son and can do it again
Plus the way I look at it, 20 weeks is half way and finding out the sex is my reward for making it half way.
I had bad cramping at 16w2d and the doc sent me for an u/s to check cervical length. I asked the tech if she could tell the sex and she said yes (everything is wonderful by the way)
I had the Harmony test offered to me at 10weeks, even though I'm low risk. Out of pocket I paid $195, and they did a blood screen for certain trisonomies and sexual conditions. In doing so, you learn the sex. I'm due Jan 22. Also, at my 10 week ultrasound we saw which side the placenta was, and the results were conclusive.
I'm due 12/29, so a bit further along than many on this board. I had an appointment early this week (17 wk), and the doctor tried to see the sex, but LO kept the cord between his/her legs the whole time! Bummer! So now I have to wait two more weeks until my anatomy scan on 8/7.
@tayberries that is the same day we find out! We are due on the 17th . However we did just decided to go through with the genetic screening so we may find out sooner.
I am due the 19th too!!! We Dont find out until 20 weeks... We are not going to do an elective u/s.. Even though it is veeeery tempting... Since this is our first:).. I was wondering how everyone was finding out too..didn't even think of elective..
I found out at 20 weeks with DS and will probably do that (or 19) with this one too. I have an appointment on Monday at 15 weeks, but I don't think they'll do an u/s then.
Instead of using the Doppler, my doctor has been doing u/s. So I am 3 for 4 on appointments. At my last (15 weeks) he said he could guess, but we aren't finding out so I said no. I am due 1/1 and my anatomy scan is scheduled for 18w6d.

Doctors do them around 20 weeks now, but you can pay for
one to be done at 16 ( and yes its accurate, I have done it 3 times and up until
a few years ago getting the scans done at 16 weeks was the norm). Also, some
people are due much closer to the start of January and have done the 16 week
scan
I'm also due the 19th! Our OB doesn't schedule that u/s until 18 weeks. DH and I live a few hours away from "home" now so we did an elective u/s yesterday at a very cool center where the room is more like a hotel room than a doctor's office, and the u/s was put on a big screen TV. We wanted to do it while we were in town visiting our families so they could all be there when we found out. They loved being a part of it and honestly I loved having them them there too. It was amazing.
I was technically 14w6d but the baby has been measuring at least a week ahead for every other u/s. I honestly don't know if that means just for size or if that includes development but we gave it a shot. And the tech was VERY convinced it was a boy. She said there was no doubt and he was definitely "showing it off". Everyone in the room could tell.
I'm due the 20th...I found out it was a boy through the panorama generic testing. A simple blood test to check for abnormalities and the gender (if you choose)
My boyfriend and I are planning on paying money just after we are at 16 weeks. Excited since I haven't seen a pic of my baby since it was 8 weeks .... sigh. Going to see it again at 20 weeks.
Im also due January 19th! I don't know yet. In fact I'm in no rush. Once you find out people (families) go a little crazy. I'm struggling so hard with boys names. Hopefully it's a girl
I went in for my 16 week appointment just to check the heartbeat but couldn't find it (handheld was acting up) so my dr did an u/s and the baby was spread wide open! We definitely saw it was a boy! Still have my anatomy scan on the 22nd.
I am in the 20week boat...my DH and I have discussed possibly doing a voluntary 4D at one of the local ultrasound places but I think we will just wait it out till the 20 week. Its now only a month away, August 28th!
My doctor won't let me know until the 20week appointment, but we just found out my husband will have to go out of state for work and will miss that appointment. We ended up making an elective appointment at another place and finding out we are having a girl at 17w1d! The gal said she always checks 3 times before giving her opinion and she has never been wrong! My instincts have been telling me girl for a long time now, so happy!
