1st Trimester

first appointment

Hi I just found out I am pregnant with my first baby. I am 5 weeks pregnant. I took a home pregnancy test but I was wondering if I needed to go to my family Dr to confirm. I called our local maternity clinic and they booked me in for 12 weeks. It just seems kind of late especially for not having an official conformation. This may be a silly question but I was just looking for some direction. Thank you

My GYN had me come in to confirm and do some bloodwork but my understanding is that is abnormal. My GYN also doesn't do prenatal care so she has been seeing me and giving me a little bit more attention until I switch to a new OB. What I have heard is that scheduling an appointment for 12 weeks is normal. My first appointment with my new OB is for 10 weeks. I wouldn't worry too much - they're professionals so I'm sure it's the way they run the practice.

    By the way, Congrats!!!

  • My doc had me come in right away to do a pee test to confirm. Was kind of a waste of time as that is all they did. However, when I left they gave me a package on miscarriage, morning sickness, prenatals, excersize, sex and all sorts of other info so I guess that was kind of helpful. my first ob appointment was at 10 weeks, they tried to hear with the Doppler but couldn't, they didn't do any blood work or a pap as I had both done in may, I did have a scan at 8+5 for dating.  I think 12 weeks is normal for first appnt.
  • Every doctor is different. Mine sees you between 7-8 weeks. 12 weeks sounds odd to me.
  • I'm not currently pregnant but at my last OB/GYN appointment my OB told me that when I got a BFP to wait until I was 8 weeks to come in but AngeliqueRose is right, every office will have a different policy.

  • Yep, 8-10 weeks is pretty average, but like PP's said every office has different policies. Honestly they won't do much more than testing you. Just a pelvic exam and a crap load of paperwork. If you are going at 12 weeks you should be able to hear baby's heartbeat on the doppler, so that is something extra to look forward to. Good luck to you!

  • I think my sister had Lupron.  She was developing too fast.  Does that sound right?  Shes 6'3'' now.

  • Its very common to not be seen until 8-12 weeks, unless there has been a history of infertility or other problems such as an "incompetent cervix", or a chronic illness.

  • My doctor didn't want to see me until 12 weeks either.  With my first, I went in for a "dating ultrasound" at 7 weeks, so this is different for me (a different hospital though) but it makes sense.  There isn't much they can do for you at this point anyway....
