Diet causing diaper rash?

My DD is 6 weeks yesterday and exckusively breastfed. She's also had a diaper rash for 5ish weeks. Her pedi said it was a burn and not yeast. We switched to Pamper sensitive diapers and water and viva paper towels for wiping.

I also used a hydrocortisone cream for several days and use a&d or desitin on it with every change. And soak it daily in epsom salts.

Anyway, could it be my diet? Or any suggestions for a cream to use?

Re: Diet causing diaper rash?

  • Is her poop yellow and seedy? If it is green and/or mucousy that could be an indication of a food sensitivity; however I didn't think those became apparent at 1 week old but I could be wrong.

Alternatively, is it possible you have an over supply? If LO is getting too much foremilk and not enough hindmilk I think that can cause diaper issues too.

Did you look at kellymom.com to see what she says? I've found that site very helpful for a number of issues.

I haven't checked Kellymom but her poop started out yellow but it has been green. Not all the time though. She isn't usually gassy or colicky though.

I do have a slight over supply so I do try to nurse LO on one side for at least 10-15 minutes and then switch if she's still hungry.

I think I may make a call to my LC too.

  • Probably a good idea to call the LC. 10-15 minutes may not be enough.... You might try letting her drain that breast until she seems done (e.g., pops off or stops sucking). I have a slight oversupply and my DD only ever nurses one side .
