son of a . . .

This is the second time I cut my LO's finger while trying to clip her nails. Ugh!!!!! Between this and forcing the zantac down her throat while she screams I feel AWFUL!!!!

Re: son of a . . .

  • Try cutting them after a bath (the nails are softer). Also I make sure to push the skin back before I get the clipper in position. I finally got the hang of it- who knew clipping nails could be so scary!!

Don't clip them.  I just bit my son's until he was old enough to be fascinated and sit still. I do the same with the baby.  My friend asked her pediatrician about it and she said it was totally fine.  It's not going to hurt them.

File them instead of cutting if you're grossed out by biting them.
This. I bite DS off, usually when I'm feeding him and he's nice and calm
  • I cut ds when he's nursing. Otherwise he won't sit still.

I clipped his skin and drew blood the second day he was home. I felt awful. Luckily they heal quick and I think I only did it once after that. I just make sure I only have nail in there and not skin or I pull the skin back.
  • We don't cut DD's nails, we buff them.
    Works great!

My pedi said not to do this as it can cause an infection but I guess there are differing opinions. We file DS's because I'm afraid to clip them.

  • I've also heard not to bite them for the same reason. I've tried filing but hers get so long so fast that the file doesn't cut it... And she scratches the heck out of her face and arms and head. I typically pull skin back and insert my fingernail under hers as an extra guard. But she pulled her hand at last second and that was that. I am going to check out that buffer though!
  • @giggler25‌ I would highly recommend it. It's one of my fave baby products. According to the store I bought it from it is one of their top selling products for new moms. I hadn't even heard of it but I'm so glad they told me about it bc I would be terrified to cut DD's nails. It comes with different buffing pads for different ages (0 to 3 months, 3 to 6 month, etc) and has two speeds. Awesome product.
  • I got a set of clippers on amazon that have a little light, they work great and I have yet to cut her!

I had a hard time biting her nails, they just want to rip and I end up pulling them, don't like how it feels for either of us!

  • I (knock on wood) haven't cut dude yet. I wait til he's napping then slip the nail clipper under the corner of his nail and move it under the nail. If that makes any sense. By finding the nail edge I know I'm not catching any skin in there because I can see the clipper below the white of the nail and I'm above the skin on the side of the nail. The toe nails scare me the worst because his tip up.
  • I've nipped DD twice now and felt awful. I was biting them while nursing, but she doesn't tolerate that anymore and she screams if I try. Since I want to keep the breast a "happy place", I've stopped trying. I clip after her bath. She usually cries but it's mostly because she doesn't want to be held still. It's hard when they don't understand.

I have the same issue with the nail file; her nails grow too long and strong to file them. That buffer sounds interesting, I'll have to check that out!

This is what I use for both kids. I think I've nipped a finger twice in nearly two years. Plus my toddler loves the light.

I cut DS' s finger the day he was born (he had some long fingernails!). I think DH was more horrified than DS.

I cut them when he's asleep or nursing. Still doesn't eliminate all possibilities of LO getting cut, but lessens it a lot.

  • I also clip my baby's nails while she's eating. I wait a few minutes til she starts to relax and her hands are relaxed. I also pull her skin back a little to make sure I only have nail in the clipper. Have yet to cut her skin!
  • I cut DS about 3 weeks ago and it bled like a stuck pig for about 15 min. I cried cuz he screamed bloody murder and I felt like the worst mother ever. Now it's a lot easier but I can't bite them because I'm afraid to bite them too short or I would!

  • Clay loves his changing pad. He seriously will chill out there. So that's where I clip them. I've come close but so far so good. However, they still grow like crazy!

  • I nicked DD pretty bad last week. But she got her revenge by screaming her head off until she projectile vomited all over me, so we're even.

  • I use the baby nail scissors. So much easier than the clippers!
  • I am usually good at using the baby nail clippers, but I nicked her finger for the first time the other night. It was mostly because i was at a weird angle with her and was getting cocky with my ability. I felt soooo bad! I kept apologizing to her as if she could understans me. Anyway, she cried until we washed it with a cleanser I bought for cuts/scrapes.

I always thought that biting nails was kinda gross...I'm surprised it's something that is done for babies, but I guess it works.

I find the little nail scissors much easier to control than regular baby nail clippers. The only time I cut his skin was using clippers. I sometimes just bite off any snaggle nails and file them down!
