Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

15 month checkup worry

My daughter Aria will be 15 months on July 30. Her doctor appt isn't until Sept. 2. Her 12 month appt was about 3 weeks after her birthday. I worry a lot being a first time mom. Is it ok that she will be having her 15 month checkup when she is actually going to be 16 months? Also, I am.moving in August to a new state and I have to switch her to a new doctor and I am worried about how that transition will go, any advice on having a new doctor would be appreciated. Thank you

Re: 15 month checkup worry

  • Are there vaccinations at this appointment? (My pediatrician doesn't even do a 15 month check up, only an 18 month one, so I'm not sure). As long as having the appointment later doesn't mess with your vaccination schedule, you should be ok. It's probably more of a weight and developmental check more than anything.

When you do move practices, my advice would be to have your own documentation on when your daughter had her shots (and any other pertinent medical history). When we switched, it turned out the state database for vaccine information had the dates of my daughter's shots wrong, and it looked like she needed to be re-dosed on 5 or 6 vaccines. Thankfully, I had all the documentation on my phone (I use an app called "Total Baby") and it turns out, the dates were just wrong. As someone who has been very careful she is not receiving vaccinations she doesn't need, I was so glad I had the dates myself, otherwise she would have received double doses.

  • Don't stress about the appointment being when she is 16 months. As far as I know the 15 month checkup is to just check in, not for any vaccines.
Request a copy of your daughter's records from your current doctor and then you can mail them or take them to your appointment at the new office. Unless your daughter has a major illness or medical condition they will basically be wanting to know her immunization history, her general health and eating/drinking/sleeping habits. It will be a slight adjustment but hopefully you like the new doctor.
