Sciatic nerve relief

Does anyone have any tips for dealing with sciatic nerve pain?  My little one loves to press on mine and its excrutiating.

Re: Sciatic nerve relief

  • I have a herniated disc that flared up when I got pregnant and enlisted the help of a physical therapist and chiropractor. It's helped a lot to the point where I don't get much pain from it at all. You can also do press ups, they help with the pain (shown here in fig 1,2 and 3) https://www.spine-health.com/wellness/exercise/exercise-sciatica-a-herniated-disc

  • I have found that swimming helps!
  • I see a chiropractor weekly and she gave me the best advice - ice it.  It helps reduce the inflamation around the nerve and really helps.  15 minutes every hour when you can.

This is also a godsend for pubic area pain.  I fall asleep with an ice pack between my legs...not sexy but it works!

  • Swimming is great! Walking, sitting, yoga, just move around and try not to stay in one position too long. Even though sometimes you have to.
I'm in a place where I can't go to a chiropractor so I at times would even ice my back. It does provide some relief. Some say a heating pad works. Try both and which ever one works for you stick with. Hang in there... at least we have comfort knowing it will be over when the LO arrives!
  • One word: Osteopath.  And you won't have to go back weekly! Usually 1-2 treatments solves the problem.

I alternate a heating pad on low (approved by my OB) & ice. I've got 2 herniated discs I was in PT for last year that I was nervous would flare up when I got pregnant. I have pain, mostly in my tailbone, but nowhere near as bad as last year.

My OB also said to do the cat pose. Go on all 4's and arch your back up like a cat stretching & hold a few seconds. Repeat that about 10x 1-2 times a day.

Good luck! Hope you find some relief!

  • Maybe yours will spontaneously resolve itself like mine did! My baby boy was sitting on mine from weeks 28-31. After that - pain gone! What helped was sitting on the edge of the couch, taking my ankle and resting it on the top of my opposite knee, leg out like a chicken and then leaning forward and streeeeetching that muscle out. Hopefully that description makes sense! If not google it lol
