Red Spot By Bottom Lip

Ok So we obviously plan on talking to her Pedi about this at her 2 year check up soon but I figured I'd ask the community as well.

My daughter is almost 2...in 6 days. The past month we noticed a red patchy area that popped up right under the left side of her bottom lip. I at first thought it was just a pimple but it grew a little larger over a few days. Looking at it, I at first thought it was a cold sore. Now me and my wife have never gotten cold sores but I know that its very common in people and that you can have the virus your whole life without getting one.

Anyhow, i'm rambling. So we kept a close eye on it and started to cut back on fruits to see if she was allergic to something etc and it just stayed there. It never spread anywhere else. Eventually it started to slowly fade in color and just this past weekend it seemed to completely disappear on its own and her lip looked totally normal. Now let me be clear that it never looked like it was filled with puss, never scabbed up etc like cold sores do. I did some research on cold sores and cold sores in kids and they always say they scab up and can leave a little pink area after healing. This just slowly faded and was just completely gone without a trace.

A day went by and then just this past monday I looked and noticed the red was slowly coming back and now last night it was totally back again. Same spot, same size. We're totally baffled. My mother who is a nurse kept talking about the sun. And we are wondering if now it is the sun. She goes out everyday and the week it slowly faded and went away, it had been raining all week and she hardly went out. The day it was completely gone we had her out in her little pool and then the next day it started to show again.

Anyone else had this problem or have any idea what it could be? It doesn't seem to bother her but it just looks crappy.

Re: Red Spot By Bottom Lip

  • DD had something similar on her jawline right around her 1 yr appointment and I was freaking out about it.  It was a red patch that almost looked like a rash or pimple or something not good.  Pedi checked it out twice for me and both times said it was just contact dermatitis and it would go away on it's own.  We had to make sure to keep her face clean, especially after she ate or drank anything since saliva would only aggravate it.  I also put aquaphor on it every day.  It took like 2 weeks to go away but hasn't come back since.  DD had a cold at about the same time.  Not sure if this helps you.

Could it be eczema?  Since you described it as a red patchy area, that's what first came to my mind.  Both my kids have had it.  DS1 had a spot to the side of his mouth.  It was about 1 square inch and it came and went for over a year.  We got some hydrocortisone cream from the doctor at one point but with it being so close to his mouth we were somewhat hesitant to use it.  It's gone now, haven't seen it in over a year, I think.  DS1's skin has gotten much better, he has grown out of it. I never could figure out a trigger for that particular spot.
