Trouble TTC

Maybe you can relate ( baby and preg mentioned -not mine)

So as the title says ... Maybe you can relate...

so I'm still very new in the IF process, and recently had my " class/ orientation" for the IF clinic. It was mainly reviewing my cost and insurance coverage, agreeing and moving on. So I read all the paper work and discussed all the cost with my DH and agreed to move forward. This is obviously not a cheap route since most insurances cover little to nothing for treatments and appointments and what not and it becomes a very costly out of pocket expense.

So with all that said, it totally bummed me out looking on Facebook and seeing all these great and" happy " post of friends who are either pregnant or just had a baby. But the new kicker that gave me a bit of a sting ...was seeing a friend buy a new house. I live In a nice apartment but my DH and I have been working so hard to save to buy a house. But now with the IF issues it will eventually suck all our savings; and the light at the end of the tunnel for buying a house is gone.

sorry for this rant just wish insurance covered more for us with IF trouble.

Ok rant is over.

  • @Rcvb22‌ yes this is so not fair, your story totally helps, and I wish you all the luck in the world on your journey. I can totally agree on the baby before a house because me and my DH had the same convo. GL :)

  • Hi and welcome. I'm sorry you are going through IF; there are many here paying OOP.

I also am pretty early in the process but just with monitoring and meds it's costing around 1000 dollars just for a femara cycle! I was shocked! At the moment we plan to just pay as we go but if we need to do more expensive treatments we will probably have to take some time to save first. It is really frustrating and insurance not covering IF makes me so upset! I hardly ever go to the doctor (I know something could happen anytime so it's good to have insurance) but I feel like the one time in my life I need actual procedures done I get to pay for it myself anyway! Okay, rant over! I totally understand your frustrations!

It is always hard to see others get something that we want so badly. I do try to think to myself that I don't know what those people went through to get pregnant or what their finances look like and that helps me feel better. Anyway, I hope your testing goes well and you come up with a plan soon! Good luck!

  • Good luck starting with your new doctor!!

I'm so sorry about the finances thing. One thing we realized was, IF is a money pit. :( Although we do own a (very small) house, we've got student loans as big as the mortgage, and DH is still in school. It just feels unfair that we have to screw up our families' best financial future (we were all set to pay extra and be debt free in 10 years), right at the moment we are trying to be stable and bring a new baby into the mix!

When it feels really painful to pay all those bills with no guarantee (and when DH gets really prickly about it), I try to remind us both how much regret we would always have if we thought, well that extra random $20k in our lifetimes, that totally makes up for having lost the chance to be parents, right? NOT! :) We try to remember how much it costs a family to raise a child anyways. It's easier to feel justified in spending a small portion of that in trying to have that child. And if (please, Lord, no) we never do have a child, we'd still be financially in a way stronger place than those with children, so that makes it easier to see the money as worth it regardless.

I hope your RE gets creative and finds ways to get some of it covered for you!

  • The picking and choosing what insurance can and do not have to pay for is a scam to me.

    Example:

Testosterone injections =$15 copay but left him sterile.
Clomid = $40 a month so his body can make his own testosterone is not covered.
hCG injections = $180 every two weeks so he can make his own testosterone is not covered...

So why is the harmful one that risks stroke and sterility covered but the ones that help him safer and more efficiently aren't?

Fertility shouldn't be seen as elective by Insurance, the FDA, our employers, or anyone else. It should be our choice and we should be able to make sure we are taking the best steps that we can to care for our own well being. We shouldn't have to take the cheaper drug with higher risks, I shouldn't have to drive to Mexico or Canada to get the Rx at a reasonable price.

  • @WishUponAChild‌ I also don't think IF coverage should be excluded! our plan covers a lot of "unnecessary" medical things so I really don't get why IF isn't covered at least a little. Also people who make choices to have a certain lifestyle can then get treatment to help with all the health issues that they caused to their body, but someone who has IF did nothing to even contribute to their diagnosis. I could rant more but I know it wouldn't get me anything except more annoyed. It makes me so frustrated! I have heard the argument that insurance covers things that will cost them less money long-term. Anyway, I totally understand your frustration!

Then that isn't INSURANCE... Insurance is the equitable transfer of the risk of a loss, from one entity to another in exchange for payment. It is a form of risk management primarily used to hedge against the risk of a contingent, uncertain loss.

that is suppose to be covering our risk of loss not theirs. We pay them and they cover us... this isn't suppose to be we pay them and they choose what they get to cover us for.

    It makes me angry.

Clomid is covered for my DH but not me.  I had to laugh at that.  I have to take the clomid and then this time femara because of our issues and they cover clomid for him with no questions.

  • @viola27‌ I think that is awesome your. Wrote a letter and it completely sucks Insurance companies make it so difficult for us who have real medical conditions. And my DH and I feel this will totally be worth every penny!! This whole experience and journey has brought us so much closer then we were before. ( which was pretty darn close) :)
