We didn't do birth photos but only spent about $150 for newborn photos and got all the rights to the photos. After that I got a good DSLR camera and take my own pics!
This isn't birth photography, but we did the "Baby Plan" with our photographer. We paid $550 for 5 sessions (newborn, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 1 year), and she offers the Baby Plan members the CD images/print release for half off ($175). We ended up buying the CD of every session. It's pricey, but it's probably the best $1500 I've ever spent. I treasure those pictures.
My mom did our birth photography pictures. She's an amateur photographer, but she did a good job. If we're lucky enough to get to do it all over again, I'll probably hire our photog for the birth session as well.
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
