Soy Nut Butter vs. Peanut Butter

Apparently DS' favorite lunch at DC is soy nut butter and  jelly sandwiches.  We are a peanut butter home (and DS has had peanut butter with no issue), but he will obvs not be able to have peanut butter at school, SO, I'm looking for recommendations for soy nut butter.  Apparently the brand they have at DC is one that is only available from a distributor, so we can't buy it.  Any brand suggestions???

  • I never knew soy nut butter existed! I make my own nut butters, they are super easy to make. Could you maybe make your own?

i personally prefer to limit soy due to the heavy use of GMO in soy products, but also due to the phytoestrogen levels in soy.....so i don't know any soy brands..can you do almond butter at school? they sell that at costco and it's super yummy. sunflower seed butter is good too, but suuuuper pricey.

    This!

I don't serve soy to my kids due to the phytoestrogens. What about sunbutter, which is made out of sunflower seeds? That should be okay, even for most nut restricted places.

Eta: apparently I need to read prior posts before posting. Jennlin said everything.

Peanut butter gives me killer heart burn, do you think almond butter is easier on the belly? I've wanted to try it but the price keeps me from buying it.

i wish i knew. every one's body reacts differently. best bet is to just try a little bit and see if it affects you. if it does, then gift it to a friend.

  • Thank you! I'm going to try sun butter!

Peanuts are a legume, not a tree nut, so your body will most definitely react differently. They are very expensive, but I would reiterate making your own in a food processor or blender. It cut the cost in half and is the simplest thin to do. Step one: place almonds in processor. Step two: turn processor on. That's it. In about half an hour you have almond butter.
That's so awesome thanks! I will deft be trying this out ASAP! I miss eating pb&j!
  • School don't allow the use of peanut butter!? WTF

Is it just daycares? PB&j crustless were one of our most popular lunch items at our school.

No problem! Oh and save your money and avoid higher priced raw almonds - they cook during the process.

Because so many kids are allergic nowadays and it's a really easy (for some) to have a reaction by just having those types of products nearby.

My nephew is crazy allergic to peanuts. My brother had peanut butter when he was on a business trip. He had it like 3-4 days before he came home. Gave my nephew a kiss and he ended up in the hospital. Unfortunately his has gotten worse. He used to be in a peanut free school, but they don't have one where they moved. So he and a few other students have a peanut free table, which works out pretty well for him.

Oh wow that is pretty extreme. I used to have to double check and make sure 1 of our kids are only the snacks his Mom gave him. He was a little snot and always would trade snacks if you didn't keep an eye on him. I worked for the after school program.

  • Thanks guys!  Now, I feel like I should be telling DC that I don't want him eating soy nut butter sandwiches and instead sending him with  my own version using one of the alternate nut butters you've all suggested!
