Crazy spiders and pest control.

We've needed to get an exterminator for a while now, but I hate the thought of using chemicals around Sam. Well, I was outside today knocking down webs on the back side of our house with a broom and complaining to DH and finally admitted that we really need to get someone out here to treat things. An hour later, we got visited from a pest control company's door to door salesman - it was bizarre timing, and although I NEVER buy stuff from solicitors, I did it.

They had an opening for this afternoon and the guy who comes to treat our place stops part way through and asks me if my son ever plays in the north side of our house. Turns out he found several brown recluse spiders and a black widow over there. Sam is over there all the time too so now I'm completely freaking out. Probably unnecessarily, but holy crap. If he got bit by one of those, it would kill him.

So what do I do now? Get the inside treated too even though there are chemicals involved with that? They definitely have to come back and do our garage because there are some crazy big spiders in there (I'm kind of ticked because I asked them to do it today and they didn't). I'm super nervous because he said the spiders would be on the move for the next week or so and I'm convinced we're all going to die from poisonous spiders now.
Yeah, I'm rational like that.

Re: Crazy spiders and pest control.

  • Are there spiders inside the house? I would ask, but often treating the outside solves the problem.

  • Thanks everyone! We're having them come back tomorrow to treat the garage and inside the house. And we're packing up LO and going to stay at my parent's place for the night.

@lubire135 - you made me feel *much* better about all this. We're in northern IL in a suburban area, but very near rural. I grew up out here but I've never had problems with spiders like I've sen at this house. Not sure why it is. We've got a lot of shade and a lot of mosquitos since we're near some water, so maybe that's it. Thankfully it's mostly just been outside, but I'm still going to get inside treated, at least to start. I'm doubting the previous owners ever did anything so we'll see what happens.

We have those spider plug ins. I put them in after we built our house & noticed a HUGE difference. They last a few years & I've noticed when they have to be replaced or sometimes DH will unplug it & forget to put it back. However if you have pet birds, mice, hamsters you can't use them but dogs & cats its OK.

  • LOL!
I'm really proud of myself. I opened the windows today.
Well…some of them. And only after checking for eight legged friends.  :)
