Gagging

Is anyone else's baby still gagging on super small solids? I had wanted to do BLW and he gagged so much and threw up that we basically stopped and started pyres the whole time. Now I'm trying to reintroduce some small stuff like the plum puffs and he continues to gag then appear like it is caught in his throat and throw up everywhere. I asked the doctor and she just said maybe he does not like them.,,,I don't think that's it because he sees me coming with them and is all about it. He is fully crawling and pulling him to standing positions everywhere...any thoughts?

Re: Gagging

  • He needs to learn to not just swallow everything, rather keep small pieces in the front. Does he have teeth? When S eats, I bite my teeth repeatedly to remind him to chew. They like to mini at this age.

Yeah he has 7 teeth and has had them since 6 months. I've been making chewing gestures each time and he laughs at me.

@MissLauraPants‌ my son is the same way :/ We think, in our situation, it has to do with the dissolvable pill he has to take daily. He really hates it now, and seems to associate every "hard" food with meds.

:(. He probably does with that case. Any soft foods you've tried with any successes? I have tried squished blueberries, Avacado, eggs and mashed potatoes in solid forms. He does however loooove tomato soup but I can't just feed him that forever lol

  • We had trouble with this too and BLW didn't work for us either. Just recently, in the past few weeks have they really gotten the hang of it. They always gagged and often threw up. I don't really know what changed but one day they seemed to get it and now we're off and running with it.

How is he with thicker purees or cereal? I started making oatmeal gradually thicker and thicker until it was almost pasty so that they would have to mash it around their mouth a bit before they swallowed. I don't know if it helped or not.

  • We're still working on solids too. Ds surprises me everyday with things that he'll eat and it is always changing. He loved blueberries yesterday and hated them today. I would just keep trying and definitely do some softer foods like avocado or bananas.

Another thing that worked for us it that I would put food at the front of his mouth so when he'd close his mouth, he would bite the food. Not sure if that really made the difference but ds seemed to really catch on after that.

LO was gagging on foods too, and then it seems like one day it just clicked. I still watch him to make sure he's okay, but when he gags now, he usually coughs and figures out how to get the little piece of whatever outta the back of his throat.

He's only had puffs, peas, carrots, shredded cheese, eggs, and pancakes. Most of which goes to the dogs or ends up in his diaper or...on his head.
