Sleep - again

I'm starting to think our sleep issues are not normal. I'm not so concerned that LO won't sleep during the day without being held. That seems fairly normal. But nighttime is finally starting to wear me down completely and worry me. DS is doing worse and worse. He may sleep one two or one hour stretch. Then maybe 45 minutes. Then only in my arms. This can't continue. I find myself falling asleep while feeding without meaning to. Is a call to the pedi too drastic at this point? (DS is eight weeks and this has been an issue since about three weeks.)

Re: Sleep - again

  • Is he swaddled? How is he acting on wake up? (Startling awake? Hungry? In pain? Etc?) How long after feeding is the wake up? Is heon a flat surface? Does he puke frequently? Cry for ages for no obvious reason?

8 weeks is a rough age for a lot of NB issues. Just trying to winnow out what may be going on.

He is swaddled, on an incline, has a pacifier, has white noise, it's taking Gerber soothe drops. He's not always hungry on wake up.

He typically wakes up crying. He also has a lot of gas despite burping after feedings and bring kept upright for half an hour before laying down. He's just recently had a couple serious puking moments pretty soon after eating.

But he can be consoled with bouncing on an exercise ball. And even when he sleeps on me during the day he startles awake a lot and either burps, farts, whines, etc. And then I jiggle him back to sleep. So I don't know if it's bad sleep associations and he can't self soothe or maybe reflux or tummy issues?

  • It may be worth looking into reflux. If he's waking up crying the majority of the time, it sounds like there's some kind of pain/discomfort happening. I'm sorry, that's really rough :(

  • Or if your EBF it could be something your eating. Or if he FF it could not agree with him.

But if he's awake and crying, somethings up.
  • Ugh! I just posted something very similar. I am with you. Following.

I also wonder about what it means for a baby to arch their back. DS when crying will sometimes pull his legs away from my body if I'm holding him against me. Is that considered arching his body?

Sounds like something digestion related... be it reflux or a tummy issue. the puking after eating and waking up in pain makes me think reflux. Does he arch his back when he's crying?

Also, a two month old is too young to self-soothe, so no worries that he isn't doing that yet.

  • DS was similar and we finally put him on Zantac for reflux. It has made a world of a difference!!

I give. I'm calling the pedi tomorrow. Worse he can say is to suck it up and deal with it as it is which is what we've already done the past five weeks.

  • We had the same issue. Wouldn't sleep unless held. Screamed when layed down. Swaddle sacks and Zantac have worked wonders. Been sleeping in his crib since 7 weeks and wakes up once or twice a night. Our ped said the signs for reflux were coughing or choking sounds, arching the back, congested sounding, bubbling at the mouth and excessive spitups.

  • I will also add that zantac helped our LO as well. Certainly worth a call into the pediatrician. Definitely not too drastic at all.
