We went back to the eye doctor yesterday. DS cannot see any letters at all with his right eye. But he has 20/20 in his left eye.
We go see a pediatric opthlamologist on the 31st.
The optometrist's opinion of treatment is patching the good eye to force the bad eye to get stronger.
He said the stye on his lid is not posing immediate danger Ay this moment, but it is the cause of the problem. He said in the past, it was putting pressure on the eyeball and so the part of the brain that sees out of that eye "turned off." When the stye went down, his cornea bounced back, so there is no surface damage needing to be corrected, but the damage to his vision was already done. The stye will have to be removed eventually, but he said we will follow the specialist's lead on whether it needs to be done now under full anesthesia or can wait until DS is old enough to do it awake.
Essentially, patching the good eye will, in theory, be like turning on a light switch. He said brain cells will reawaken and move around, and DS can potentially regain full vision in this eye.
This is going to make starting school this year difficult. The Dr said he will be frustrated, run into things, have difficulty in sports, maybe need large print workbooks, have to do assignments twice (once with his patch, once without it).
I feel better about it today. Yesterday, I was really emotional. DH was a super dick yesterday morning before we went, abd that was enough to make me cry as it was. Add the Dr stuff into it, and I was exhausted, crying all day long at work, and then fell asleep on the couch without even tucking DS into bed last night.
Today is my birthday, and I'm having a better day. Not doing anything special. I'm the big 25. Lol

as for the eye it sounds like it's not terrible just yet. The school year will be rough and he'll be frustraited a lot but the fact he could potentially gain back full eyesight is very good news. It was caught at a younger age which from what I've heard the brain corrects those issues pretty quickly (DS had a lazy eye so he got glasses with a weaker prescription for that eye, his next visit to the eye dr and he no longer had a lazy eye). I hope he has a quick and full recovery. This wasn't your fault, when I took DS in for his first eye visit at the age of 3 i was told they don't even begin starting to see kids until 5 when they know the alphabet but due to his history they'd see him.
Happy belated Birthday!!! Glad you got some good news. Hopefully the pediatric ophthalmologist will have some better news. When my DS was in a patch I wore one too because it made him feel better about it. We also picked out a few different styles and let him decorate some so that it was very individual. As far as school reach out to his teacher, counselors and office staff to be aware of his condition and to monitor is behavior and watch out for the other kids behavior as well.
