Rock N Play portable basinet

Hi All, I received the Fisher Price Rock N Play portable basinet for my baby shower (first baby due in 8 weeks) and plan on using it as the nighttime basinet in our room until the baby outgrows it.  It is the kind that lays completely flat and has a plastic-like thin mattress that is machine washable.  My question is, can I use a matterss pad or basinet sheets over the mattress?  There is a large warning lable on the product that says to not use any other matteresses other than what it comes with due to a suffication hazzard, but I'm wondering about a mattress pad/sheets, so that it makes it more waterproof, not needing to wash the actual mattress as often. Otherwise, if the mattress needs to be washed and dried, and newborns sleep constantly, what are you supposed to do while it is in the washer/dryer?? I called the manufacturer but the lady did not know any other information other than what was directly stated on the label so I didn't find it very helpful.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

  • These are the sheets we used. https://www.amazon.com/Carters-Velour-Playard-Fitted-Chocolate/dp/B002UD65SG/ Absolutely amazing! I don't think putting a different mattress is recommended because of the different dimensions in playpens. They are not all standard size and vary, so it may be unsafe...

I would stay away from using a mattress pad unless it is made specifically for your RNP.  You want baby to be sleeping on something firm and completely fitted to the bed (crib, RNP, PNP, etc).  Everything needs to be nice and snug and tight so as long as you tuck the sheet under really well you should be ok.  I'm not sure how your baby is going to be but mine barely slept in his PNP or bassinet until he was a few weeks older because he had to be held all the time... he likes his snuggles!  Best of luck!
  • I agree with PP. I would not use anything that is not specifically made for your bassinet. I have this portable bassinet and my baby didn't like it until she was about 2.5 months old. She is currently sleeping in it now a month later and I'm about to transition her to a real crib (she's getting too long for the bassinet).

When my babe didn't like the bassinet, I had real success with Fisher Price Rock n Play Deluxe Sleeper. https://www.fisher-price.com/en_US/brands/babygear/products/78227

This thing saved my life in the first weeks.
