My LO is 11.5 mos now and I don't know if I'm hindering her by not giving her a spoon to try and feed herself with. She loves eating with her fingers and shoveling food in her mouth. She's getting to the point where she shakes her head when I try to feed her anything with a spoon (yogurt in the mornings).
