Pregnant after IF

Question about testing at home after IVF

I am 7dp3dt and tested positive today at home. Since I am actually leaving on an overseas trip next week, I phoned my clinic to ask them for a prescription for progesterone and estrogen to take with me. The nurse I spoke with was very rude. She said she can't give me that prescription because my home tests aren't valid because they were done too early. I tested out the trigger and received negatives up until (and including) yesterday, so I know for sure this is a true positive. Now whether things will progress appropriately is another matter; I'm very much aware of everything that can go wrong, but I do need to plan for the best case scenario and take my meds with me on my month long trip.

She managed to really put a damper on my happiness today. Has anyone else ever heard something like this from a clinic? What could possibly be wrong with testing early at home? She said the earliest date I can test is July 26, which would be 15dp3dt!!!

Re: Question about testing at home after IVF

  • That's nonsense, especially since you tested out the trigger. I wouldn't take no for an answer. I would show up in person & demand the early beta because you are going out of town. Can you go over her head and request to speak to your doctor?

I'm a little surprised that you don't have a standing prescription for the progesterone. Shouldn't you be already on it? Or are you saying you won't have enough in refills for the trip? My doctor usually writes me a script for progesterone with additional refills at the beginning of the cycle. GL & congrats!

  • Thanks! I thought there was some crazy detail I was missing that makes it wrong to test at 7dp3dt but couldn't rationally see a reason why. The nurse was just super rude.
Yes I am on it but they didn't give me more than I'll need for the first couple of weeks and my trip is going to be almost 5 weeks long so I will need a new prescription. Not sure why they are so weird about it.
  • Wow! I would call back and stress that you are not going to be available to get your prescription - nor will you be at your beta or first ultrasound, I'm assuming, because you'll be out of the country!  You need those meds! If that nurse isn't helpful, ask the doctor to call you personally.

(and congrats on the positive test :))))

I was thinking the same thing. I took it from the second I did IVF and was prescribed a tonf of it from the start. When I did run out, I re-ordered it straight from pharmacy without having to do anything through the doctor. Perhaps call pharmacy and see if that works

    Good Luck

  • Honestly, I'm curious why you planned an overseas trip while you are still going through the IVF process (this includes after the transfer and beta, FYI). I imagine they will want to be monitoring you.

I don't understand this sentiment at all. After our third failed transfer, we decided to try to live life as normally as normally as possible, which for me included spending the summer out of the country. I postponed my departure until after my FET but couldn't wait around until beta. How long should one have to put their entire life on hold because of IF? At some point, you have to continue on and just hope it works. @romi_yourex, I am sorry that the nurse was so awful. Did you find another solution? My clinic was very flexible and gave me all the medicine I need in advance *just in case*. Depending on where you are going, insurance, etc., maybe you could get an appointment at a clinic in that country? (I am thinking Europe, for example.) It would be a paint, btu then they could fax/email the beta results back to your clinic, which in turn could fax the prescription. Your typical progestrone suppositories are widely available here (with a prescription, of course).

  • I love my RE, but some of his nurses are rude. It is a busy clinic, so I think the nurses have a lot of autonomy (maybe too much). They wouldn't call my meds in for my FET until my consult appt...but that would have been cycle day 5. I emailed my RE directly and he had them call the meds in so I could start the estradiol on cycle day 2! I would call in again for sure and make sure that they know you are going to be gone for a 1 month trip.

I think the nurses hate when patients test early, but I ALWAYS do. It's the only thing we can do or have control of during the 2 week wait. I always requested to have my hcg drawn early (after a positive home test) in the past (the nurses hated it, but my doctor didn't care). I had 2 losses, so I told him that I wanted to know ASAP if the numbers weren't rising appropriately!
