*BFP warning* - Question about taking early pregnancy tests at home (after IVF)

*warning: pregnancy mentioned*

I am 7dp3dt and tested positive today at home. Since I am actually leaving on an overseas trip next week, I phoned my clinic to ask them for a prescription for progesterone and estrogen to take with me. The nurse I spoke with was very rude. She said she can't give me that prescription because my home tests aren't valid because they were done too early. I tested out the trigger and received negatives up until (and including) yesterday, so I know for sure this is a true positive. Now whether things will progress appropriately is another matter; I'm very much aware of everything that can go wrong, but I do need to plan for the best case scenario and take my meds with me on my month long trip.

She managed to really put a damper on my happiness today. Has anyone else ever heard something like this from a clinic? What could possibly be wrong with testing early at home? She said the earliest date I can test is July 26, which would be 15dp3dt!!!

Re: *BFP warning* - Question about taking early pregnancy tests at home (after IVF)

  • First off id ask for a different nurse. I can't deal with rude people. Second if you tested out your trigger I would hope this would be a real bfp. You are using the same kind of test each time right? Normally you aren't supposed to test for a 3dt until day 13. But I hope it is a true positive for you!! GL!!

  • Thanks. I am on Progesterone and Estrogen but they've only given me enough to last the first 2 weeks.
Yes I used the same tests, and *warning, other pregnancy mentioned*:

With my last IVF cycle I tested positive on 8dp3dt, called the clinic and they were very excited for me, scheduled my first ultrasound etc. Things turned out really well with that pregnancy (14 month old son) so I don't understand why now all of a sudden they have a problem with testing at home.
  • Oh and they weren't going to do a Beta draw! They wanted me to come in for a urine pregnancy test on July 26, when I'll be 15dp3dt. I refused after the nurse was rude about my own tests, because their urine test won't be any better than mine, so now she's changed it to a Beta per my request.
  • IFinTN said:

I would throw a fit! You are pregnant until proven otherwise, they should give you the meds. Totally agree on asking for a different nurse, supervisor, etc.

This. There is no good reason they shouldn't give you the prescription to work with your travel plans. I find it very strange that they were going to do a urine test instead of a beta. Good luck!

TTC #2 since 2011 (took 1.5 years to conceive spontaneously after multiple failed clomid cycles and 1 failed clomid +IUI)
    Me- PCOS, borderline hypothyroid
    Him- low concentration/count

    Feb 2014- started acupuncture
    Feb 2014- BFP
    March 2014- m/c @ 5 weeks
May 2014- HSG, all clear, started Synthroid, Femara 5mg CD 3-7 + trigger + TI= BFN
Waiting for new RE appointment end of July 2014

  • Thanks. I called back and they now want me to do the Beta on Thursday. They still sounded quite annoyed with me for demanding a Beta rather than a urine test, and it has to be on Thursday so that they can call me the next day with the result and talk to me before I leave on my trip.

Honestly for those of you in the U.S., I am so jealous. We have one clinic within a 3 hour radius of the city. They are rude and seem to do all kinds of things very different from what I read on blogs. I.e. the egg retrieval was super painful both times because they couldn't give more meds because they don't have an anesthesiologist or proper equipment for it.

    *******WARNING: Possible BFP mentioned************

I am actually just 1 day ahead of you, today I am 9dp3dt and my beta is scheduled for Monday when I will be 11dp3dt so it's BS that they are making you wait so long for a beta!! I tested on 6dp3dt and it was negative. Since then, I've been testing (with several different tests, basically peeing on everything I can) since yesterday at 8dp3dt and it had been a BFP on everyone one of them , even a digital. I'm praying it's going to stay but my REs office specifically told me not to test, that they want an actual number to confirm the pregnancy. So I'm not planning on saying anything about my BFP on HPTs unless they ask! It sucks that they are making you wait to get a beta, that's BS!!

    @Lillovebug79 - Congrats!
Oh I know, their reasoning is way off. I don't understand why an early test wouldn't be valid; UNLESS it was so early the trigger was still in your system. But I tested it out and had negatives up until 6dp3dt. It's just not nice to have them rain on my parade when I'm obviously excited about my positives. I'll be peeing on sticks until Thursday and then the Beta and hopefully I'll never have to go to the clinic again! :)
Good luck to you on Monday!
  • ***BFP/CP/PG mentioned***

Honestly, I was specifically told not to test at home by my clinic as well. Because we all know I have the willpower of a fly in a vat of syrup, obviously I tested at home. When I did get a BFP at home, I called the clinic and the nurse didn't get upset with me at all and actually moved up my beta! Clearly, the end result wasn't what we were hoping for, but I'm thankful that they at least listened to me. With my first RE, they only did urine tests at first as well. (They would do a beta only if it was a BFP.) I tested positive at home with him too, and he didn't even have me POAS in his office, just do a beta. Good luck with your beta, and I hope you have a great time on your trip!
