Bacterial Vaginosis-anyone with experience?

At my appointment today, I brought up the yellow mucus discharge Ive been having since Ive recently noticed it has a "fishy" odor to it sometimes. He said this could be a sign of an infection that could possibly lead to preterm labor and prescribed me an antibiotic for it. I also mentioned my period-like cramps and he said he wouldnt be surprised if the antibiotic cleared those up, too.

He didnt say anything else and I honestly didnt know what to ask him. He seemed in a hurry.

I googled (I know...) my symptoms to see if I could find out the name of the infection and this seems to be it.

Has anyone had any experience with this that can tell me more? He didnt say anything about testing me for it, just treating it. I feel kind of confused!

  • I had it last time with my daughter but it was caught at the 12 week physical. I didnt show any symptoms of it but it came up from the pap. I got antibiotics for it and so did SO because there was a possibility of him giving it back to me.

That's weird.  I was told it was not contagious...

Yeah I read that too. Was it "trich" that you had possibly? They said that it sexually transmitted and your SO is often treated at the same time as you.

I forgot to mention this to my dr, but the past two times Ive had sex, it has been kind of painful. I dont have pain while urinating tho. I guess Ill just try the antibiotic and see what happens...

  • Nope my doctor said it was Bacterial Vaginosis. She did say that it is rare but does happen and she didnt want to take the risk of me getting it again. Especially seeing as I had no symptoms.

  • OP, I'd get right back on the phone with your doctor and get an actual diagnosis before you take those meds. Antibiotics aren't sugar pills--you should only take them if you actually have an infection that needs treating. Especially while pregnant.

The claim that antibiotics will also resolve the cramping is super dubious, too. I wouldn't just press for more answers, I'd complain.

  • Though not while pregnant, I've had BV many times. Mine stemmed, seemingly, from a latex sensitivity. Once I switched to non latex condoms (and everything else--I don't even let the dentist touch my mouth with latex!) and I switched to a sensitive skin lube, I stopped having the issue. It was horrible--I'd ping pong between bv and yeast infections bc of the medications. I don't think I took oral medication--I think I had vaginal cream.

  • I haven't since I've been pregnant, but have had that diagnosis in the past. I thought that bacterial vaginosis is just a generic diagnosis they give when they think you have a bacterial infection. I didn't know that it is a specific type of infection.

  • I was diagnosed with BV because I had some pink spotting. Cleared up after antibiotic.
My advice is to go to a health food store and get a good probiotic. I thought I was super-pregnant-woman and thought I was too cool for probiotics and at that point diarrhea would be a welcomed side effect. What I didn't plan for was the horrible yeast infection I got a week later. Eat yogurt. Take a probiotic. Trust me.

  • Hello! I was given abx for BV. I made the mistake of not eating yogurt/taking probiotics and ended up with a stupid yeast infection after the BV had healed. Hope the BV goes away fast! The abx will def help with that discharge and cramping :)

  • I tend to just lurk on this board- due Oct 19th with #2.
I had BV fairly early on with my first. I went in to see my dr between the monthly visits bc the itching & odor were terrible. I took a ten day antibiotic. I was also told that my husband & I were probably passing it back & forth, however he wasn't treated & I had no other problems with BV after taking the antibiotic. I did end up with a yeast infection about a month later. Possibly related? Or just dumb luck. I ate yogurt twice a day about 2hours after taking the medicine. You don't want to eat it too close to taking it, bc it can affect how well the meds work.
  • I had bladder infections quite a lot during my last pregnancy and my symptoms were always really painful period-like cramps in my back and abdomen. I started to feel those cramps again this last Wednesday and went to see my Dr. who ordered a urine culture and sure enough it is a bladder infection again. I asked him if the painful cramping was part of the bladder infection and he said yes - pregnant women sometimes only get the cramping as their sign that they have an infection. I was prescribed Macrobid antibiotics and I started to feel better after only 2 doses. I second that you make sure to eat some yogurt/pro-biotics to prevent a yeast infection. Good luck, and I hope neither of us get it again!

  • I had bv twice. One while pregnant with ds1, once after. I only had symptoms not pregnant, and it was just yellow discharge plus a hint of odor. Both times I was given a gel to insert.
