Pregnant after IF

Hi from IF and morning sickness question?

Hi all, we recently just got our first BFP after three years of TTC, one IVF cycle and three subsequent FETs. To say that we are delighted is a bit of an understatement - we are ecstatic, if cautiously so. I tested pretty late (> 3 weeks after 2dt), because I am currently away from home for the month. My first U/S won't be until the beginning of August when I get back. FX everything looks good then. I am currently dealing with the most unpleasant day-long nausea that I have ever experienced and struggling to eat much at all (the heat is not helping, either). While I am not complaining after all we've been through, if anyone has any good tips, I would be super grateful. Ginger ale and saltines aren't cutting it for me. I do manage one sesame seed roll and a fresh-pressed orange juice (but not normal OJ, go figure...) a day, but that's about it. I am worried about eating right, though, because I can't really get anything else down. If being sick all day long is what is going to take, then I'll take it.

Re: Hi from IF and morning sickness question?

  • Congrats!

I was in Mexico and France during the worst of my morning sickness (8-11 weeks) and really suffered trying to find something to eat. I had a sea band that I wore that seemed to help, but I don't know that you'll be able to easily find one outside of the US. Eating peppermints seemed to help. A co-worker of mine who is also pregnant and was on the France part of the trip with me said that she heard eating plain salty potato chips is supposed to calm your stomach enough to eat something else. I think that tip worked for me at times, but not always. I pretty much only ate bread and salads though because that was all I could stomach (and not very big portions of either). I lost 5 lbs and was worried about not getting enough to eat for the baby, but my OB wasn't concerned when I had my 11 week appt with her. She said as long as the baby was continuing to grow then it was ok that I wasn't gaining any weight.

Good Luck and I hope the m/s subsides soon :)

Congrats on the BFP! Zofran really is a lifesaver. Also try sea bands-they really seemed to help me!
TTC 2 years- Me and DH (28) with (severely) low sperm count- less than 40 total (last 2 SA showed only 5 and 6 sperm each)

    IVF #2: ER 7/17/13: 6R/3F- transferred 1 blast and 1 10 cell embryo 5dt.   Beta hell.  #1 2.5, #2 2.2- BFFFN! REALLY?
IVF #3: ER 12/1 and only 2 retrieved.  1 fertilized with ICSI.  Was planning on transferring one fresh and one frozen....fresh was only 14 cells at day 5...CANCELLED and devastated due to 5cm blood filled cyst in ovary and blood in uterus.
IVF #4: Antagonist protocol with endometrial scratch day one of stims.  ER 4/21: 6R/4M/3F- transferred 2 beautiful blasts (5dt) and one was hatching!  No frosties but hoping we won't need it!  Beta 5/4/14- 444(8dp5dt), Beta #2 10dp5dt 1002!  THIS HAS GOT TO BE IT!!!!!!!!!!  First US 5/15 we saw two of the most beautiful gestational and yolk sacs I have ever seen!

  • Thanks so much for the congratulations and tips. I am not even 6 weeks yet, so I am surprised that it has hit with such a venegance and have read that it only gets worse in the coming weeks. I actually ordered the sea bands, but shipping takes 7-21 days (?!), so I probably won't get them until I get home - better late than never! @ThoseThreeWords‌, I am excited for YOU - only a few more weeks! Canada Dry didn't work, but I picked up some fresh ginger to try to make a tea. @Puzzlefuz‌, I am actually in France right now, which is making it worse. I haven't found much that I can stomach and even the French bakeries with their gorgeous macarones make me queasy. I will definitely try the salty chips trick, though. @Momarazzi007‌, thanks for the B6 tip - maybe I can get it OTC here. @Mrs.McIrish and @rik2, I will ask at my U/S about Zofran if things continue in this direction.

I have tried them all! All worked to take the edge off but not long term....

    1.  eating frequent small meals... hard to do when you want to puke
    2. preggy pops (I ordered on amazon) or other sour candy
    3. mint gum
    4. sea bands
    5. ginger candies ( I found mine at Whole foods ) I hate Ginger but they help

When I started vomiting I called and got zofran which didn't take it away but really helped- atleast no vomiting!  It does make you constipated though!

  • Zofran (odansetron) was a lifesaver for me. If you get it, pick up some colace (docusate sodium) as well and drink lots of water - b/c zofran does cause some constipation.

My acupuncturist recommended one quarter of a green apple every hour. Random but it helped some as well.

  • Congratulations! My first pregnancy was horrible, I lost 10lbs in my first tri because I couldn't eat. I survived off chicken fingers and coke and water because most times that's all I could keep down. The best thing I heard was don't worry, the baby will take what it needs to grow in the very beginning. First tri is all about survival!

  • Congrats! High doses of B6...the recommendation is 10mg three times a day. It I've been taking 100mg daily for months and it seems to have helped quite a bit. Unisom is OTC here, but may be hard to find overseas. The generic is doxylamine. You can also use it three times a day but will potentially be sleepy. And I'd take a full dose at bedtime since what's marketed here in the US is equivalent. Unison is one of the rare category A drugs, so don't feel, bad taking it. You should be able to get zofran if you see a doc. If you can't get doxylamine, try another antihistamine like Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Good luck!

  • I got B6 and magnesium, but the package says that you should consult your doctor if pregnant. I guess I will call tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone confirm for me that 10mg of B6 and 100mg of magnesium two to three times a day should be okay. I am currently only on pure folic acid, so it is not like I am getting these nutrients anywhere else. I would be grateful to anyone who can confirm this for me, I need to be able to eat and drink again soon! :(

  • @Ecarabeo217‌, thanks so much for the info. The RE's office gave the okay for 10mg of B6 and 100mg of magnesium (the tablettes are a combination) up to four times a day. @Beachy6, thanks for asking. The B6 is actually doing something, because I am not throwing up nearly as often. Nausea is still there, but water and a little bit of bland food in regular increments stay down most of the time. All the typical home remedies haven't worked for me, though. The RE said that this could be a good sign, so if that it true, I'll take it!

  • Drugs were the only thing that really worked for me. Is there anywhere you can get a prescription filled? My RE called in Zofran for me when I was suffering and wasn't going to be able to keep my meds down. Eating frequently also helped, once I had some drugs on board. I found that cold foods were more settling to me, and hot foods made me sicker, but this is just one of those personal quirks.

  • Hi, I'm a lurker but wanted to offer some advice. I had hyperemesis and lost 18 pounds when I was pregnant. my Dr prescribed Diclegis which is a combination of unison and vitamin b6 I was told. I had tried zofran and reglan and neither of those touched my nausea. The Diclegis was a lifesaver! I realize that it might not work for everyone but just wanted to mention it just in case it might work for you. Hope you all start feeling better soon!
