adults Tdap vaccine booster

So my pedi recommended that the adults that will be closest to LO get their Tdap booster, have any of you heard of this?

When I told close family I got a lot of push back, in other words they will not be getting it. What should I do? Just let is go they all know to stay away if their sick. Do I say ok well then we will just see you in 3 months when LO gets her shots for it?

For those of you that have suggested family to get the shot, did you get any push back?

Re: adults Tdap vaccine booster

  • This has actually come up from time to time on this board.  Here's a link to a discussion from June that may help give you some insight!

My DH and parents all got their TDAP vaccine.  It actually worked out to be something of a blessing...my mom took a really bad fall last Saturday on some concrete and got hurt pretty badly.  The TDAP she got a couple weeks before helped protect her from the possibility of any Tetanus she could have gotten in that fall.  The ER staff were pretty impressed she already had it.

We were told the same by our pedi. There has been an out break of whooping cough in our area. I very nicely explained to our immediate family the risks to the baby and asked that they get vaccinated. I told them if they chose not to that would be fine but we would require a mask to warn. All of our immediate family went right out to get one. Sorry ur having difficulty. Good luck.

  • Thank you for the link, I just wasnt sure how far to push this one. Ous close family has kids older they 10 and this was not an issue back then. So they are acting like i am crazy and over protective.

and I can just see all my SIL side eyeing this and saying "great shes gonna be one of those moms"
  • My pediatrician recommended the same thing and both my and DH's parents and siblings got it without resistance. Sorry your family is giving you a hard time! I always feel like it's better to be safe than sorry.

  • We requested close family to get the vaccination and didn't get push back. It's not a bad thing that their vaccinations are up to date. My OB had me get it a few weeks ago b/c benefits can be passed to LO
  • We got it and asked our parents to get it.. there's no one else who will be around him frequently enough in the first two months to be too concerned, but anyone who seems even remotely sick will not be holding/touching him.

    Same as this

I'd side eye my SIL then.  There's been lots in the media lately about people not vaccinating and relying on herd immunity--which really starts to break down when the rest of the herd's not getting their vaccines, either.  Better to err on the side of caution!

  • With DD1 I requested, but NO ONE got it.  Not even my husband.  This time they made me get the shot again (even though it was less than 5 years and I had a reaction).  They said since I got it while little one was still inside she would reap the benefits (antibodies).  My ob said, "The shot is not for you-it's for the baby".  I really don't expect anyone else in my family to get it.
  • To piggy back off this question.. I had asked my OB when would I get the shot and she said in the hospital after delivery. Then she proceeded to tell me a lot of moms are holding off because it makes them sick and going home with a newborn + being sick = rough start. I was really kind of side eyeing what she said, my mom just got the shot this week and so far she has been fine. Has anyone heard this before or should I continue with my plan of getting the shot?

I got the shot around 32 weeks and was just fine other than my arm was sore for a day or two.

^same. I was told at 30 wks to get it.
  • I got my booster this week (38 weeks along) and like pp I just had a sore arm. The booster will be shared with LO as long as you still have an inside baby and give LO some immunities.

  • I got it at 36w because they were out of it at my previous appt.  My OB's reasoning for giving it during pregnancy is to pass it on to the baby while inside you.  Doesn't make a lot of sense to give it to you after baby's born.

  • I got mine at 30 weeks. I ended up having a reaction that required antibiotics but I didn't feel sick. Just the injection site started with a red spot the size of the end of my pinky and ended up getting to be the size of the bottom of a can of soda. But it honestly wasn't a big deal. I feel better having it than not.
  • Thanks ladies, yea the last few weeks my OB and I haven't seen eye to eye on some things so this didn't surprise me that she was trying to talk me out of it.

  • Well it looks like no one on DH's family will be getting their shot :( So I am just going to limit their access to LO for a little while. Not sure exactly how other then just ignoring the calls, since the all feel like I am being a bit over the top asking them to even get this shot. My family however will be getting the shot they didnt even question it so they will have full access to LO when ever she decides to make her way out.
