2nd Trimester

Best time to have a 3D(4D) ultrasound?

I am 20 weeks and 3 days, and I had a 3D ultrasound when I was 15 weeks and 3 days to see the gender of our miracle baby. As anyone could imagine, our baby was still soo skinny and alienated prettiest alien I've ever seen.) We did find out we were carrying a babygirl! I was absolutely excited, as anyone would be. Anyways, I was wondering what is the best time frame to go back to see your baby!? I've been thinking of going back on my 27th week or my 28th week but I'm not sure when the best time is?

Thanks so much.

  • As far as your question, I wouldn't elect to do one of those, they look creepy.
YES!  I thought it was just me who thinks they are creepy.  They scare the crap out of me!

I think they are creepy as well but I get them as part of my checkups every 5 or 6 weeks i get a growth scan to check fluid levels, cervix, movement, and her overall growth. The first one I had my mom was all excited to see the pictures and as soon as she saw them she goes "wow...these are really weird" the disappointment in her voice was kind of funny.

OP i don't suggest putting your baby through an unnecessary ultrasound (it sounds fun but I'm pretty over it) however if you want to i got the best images after my 25 weeks scan, I'm 34 weeks now and will finally graduate MFM at 36 weeks since I'll be considered full term at that point. By my last scan at
31 weeks it was harder to get images since she's head down and balled up with her foot by her mouth and the other leg stretched way out.

Why are you deciding this and not your doctor?
Since when do women need their doctor's permission for those things? Recommendation, maybe, but certainly not permission.

Tons of ultrasound places around where you have the option to get the cutesy 3D package that comes with a stack of printouts, a CD and possibly a teddy bear or something, and they even have a gift shop at the entryway sometimes.

OP: I had several ultrasounds last pregnancy due to complications, and actually got 3D 'glimpses' (just to 'pad' the situation and make it at least some what enjoyable rather than traumatic and grueling, the doc and tech were nice enough to throw in a few minutes and 3D image printouts).

First one, at about 22 weeks, was creepy as hell. Skinny, kind of misshapen, and I couldn't stop thinking about the disproportional nose.

28 weeks was still pretty skinny.

30 weeks was super cute, a little chubby, looked like a baby, and her face looked pretty much exactly what she looked like when she was born. Not even a little bit creepy, I also found out that the 'creepy' factor could come in due to image quality, the better the images look, the less creepy they are, even the early ones. I was so impressed with the few glimpses at 30 weeks, I made an appointment for a full length ultrasound.

32 weeks at my regular appointment and ultrasound, it was a bust, she had her hands curled up right by her face, and though I got to see her chunky elbows, I cancelled my 'package' deal, because I felt it'd be a waste of money and mostly time (I was still working full time and would have to take the morning and possibly day off).

So my recommendation is about 30 weeks. I'd say, 28 could be great for some women too, it's just my daughter was on the thinner side, so hence the skinniness, possibly!

Good luck and congratulations on your little one!

Maybe this is a regional thing because I've never heard of elective ultrasounds before I read about them on the bump. Personally I think it's irresponsible and selfish to expose a baby to unnecessary ultrasounds just to get a cutesy package and a teddy bear. Please see the link above posted by @emmyg65‌
Some women have 1 ultrasound, others 3, others 5, some up to a dozen, it is what it is. I seriously don't know how many I had with my daughter, but I'm guessing it would border on 20 or possibly a few more.

With this pregnancy, at 18 weeks, I've had about 6 thus far with my next one scheduled 3 weeks from now, and another one a few weeks after that. Having one elective ultrasound isn't going to hurt the baby.

Any evidence that shows harm done from a single extra ultrasound that pushed anything over the edge, I will gladly read, as long as it's scientifically-based. Ultrasounds are used for more things than to just view a fetus, some people need to have monthly ones, for example, to monitor kidney issues or the possibility of an internal aneurism. That's 12 a year.

As for the link: it says right there, there's no evidence of any harm done, they just cannot state for certain, but frankly, if you've had few done, one elective one is nothing. The only worry is the possibility of alarming the pregnant woman by identifying or on the contrary, not identifying something that was expected, in other words, 'stress'. Nobody wants to scare a pregnant woman for no reason.

  • Oh FFS having an elective ultrasound is not going to hurt anyone's baby. I went to school for it, it's just fine. The exposure is very low. If they were that harmful they wouldn't be done. To answer the question, the best time is around 30 weeks. At 28 weeks they are still on the skinny side and can look creepy so it may be a waste to try it that soon. We had a growth scan at 27w4d, tried to get a 3D shot and she was still alien-like.
