DS really won't drink milk

Just wondering if anyone has had this challenge or has any suggestions.

My DS, for the most part, will not drink milk (he's 22 months).  He has never, ever, had a cup of cold milk.  The only milk he will drink is first thing in the morning and he will ONLY drink it if I warm it for him.  If I try at any other time during the day he will refuse it and, if I try to heat it even 20 seconds less in the morning, he will refuse it.  I thought maybe I could "wean" him off the need to have it warm in the morning but I swear he can tell if it's even ever-so-slightly cooler than normal.  Plus, he's almost 2 and has been drinking from sippy cups for months (he'll drink just about anything else no matter what temperature) and I still need to keep a bottle warmer on my counter still so I can warm the morning milk and pour it into a cup - I'd love to retire the warmer!

He probably gets the equivalent of about 9 ounces of milk in the morning.  I'm not all that concerned about his intake of healthy fats etc.  He LOVES yogurt and eats plenty of cheeses throughout the day.  I would just love to be able to pour him a glass of milk with a meal and have him drink some!

How did you get your picky milk drinkers to drink a cup of milk from the fridge?

  • Are you my daughter's twin??? She also only drinks milk at breakfast and warm. We offer it at dinner and lunch and she takes a sip or two. The only cheese she eats is smoked gouda, we've tried them all. We offer her a lot of yogurt in many forms and shapes but she hasn't mastered eating it yet, most of it ends up on the tray, oh well. She refuses help so we just give her the yogurt and let her go to town. We model eating it ourselves, hopefully she'll figure it out.
  • Just keep offering but honestly it's not an issue.  DS is also 22 mos and has at most 8 oz of milk each day.  He has never cared for it and if he has too much it easily upsets his tummy.  Our GI doc just said offer other options (yogurt, cottage cheese) and he suggested giving him a Vitamin D supplement twice a week or so to help.

Just because he's a toddler doesn't mean he'll like milk.  Lots of people don't.  If he doesn't like it, he doesn't like it.
  • If he's eating yogurt and cheese, and getting fats and calcium from other sources, I really wouldn't stress about it! Milk is NOT necessary as long as they are getting the nutrients from other foods.

  • Maybe try using a different cup. DS stopped drinking water from a sippy but once I switched to a take and toss straw cup, he drinks water from it all the time now.
  • Try chocolate milk. We've used Horizon's and my LO loves it. You have to watch about adding syrup to regular milk because of sugars.
