Reusing freezer BM bags?

Can you reuse breast milk freezer bags? I used a few bags from my freezer stash on vacation and I saved the bags. Can I wash and reuse? I use medela bags

Re: Reusing freezer BM bags?

  • I used the same bags and I would vote no on this one.

  • I wash and reuse ziplocs that have meat in it.

I don't see why not. Just wash really well. And if you can't wash it the same day throw it out.
  • I'm normally that person who wants to rinse & reuse regular plastic baggies while everyone else rolls their eyes. But in this case I wouldn't. They need more cleaning than just a rinse & that seems really hard to do with a floppy bag.

  • I'm all for re-use and conservation and everything, but I wouldn't. Get bottles that you can sterilize if you want to re-use milk storage containers. JMO.

    This.

Once the bags are opened and used, they aren't sterile. There are other storage options if reusing is important to you.

  • If you actually read the bag package itself, they tell you not to reuse. In this case I would say not to reuse.

  • Thanks! I lost the insert that came with the bags. They are so expensive I figured I would ask. I got several packs as gifts so I shouldn't run out for a while

I know everyone's insurance is different but my BCBS provides a year supply of bags. I'd check with your insurance if you haven't already, they may provide some at little to no cost?

Also I know some women that use covered ice cube trays then pop out the frozen milk cubes, put them in a bigger ziplock to store. Then you can reuse the tray after you wash it properly
