Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Non CIO sleep training

So, my 18 months old is still rocked to sleep at nap time and bed time. I have another one on the way as well as an 8 year old.

I need some sleep training suggestions for the 18month old! I don't know if I can rock 2 to sleep at every nap and bedtime!!!!!

Re: Non CIO sleep training

  • If you're opposed to CIO I would suggest checking out the Attachment Parenting board. They have a lot of suggestions.

  • i'd check out elizabeth pantley's book, the no cry sleep solution. she also has a lot of tips on her website: https://www.pantley.com/elizabeth/books/0071381392.php the attachment parenting board is also great. here's a recent thread with some ideas: forums.thebump.com/discussion/12306438/toddler-sleep-help
  • I love The Baby Whisperer. Her methods have always helped my DS. He went from (1) taking no naps without being bf to (2) napping well, though only at home in his crib and only if I put him down, to (3) going to sleep different places and for different people. I do have to warn you that it's not easy, but it really does work! My cousin was having a lot of problems with her LO and she tried it and is thrilled to have some measure of sanity back in her life - her LO was really making things crazy for them all.

  • I second No Cry Sleep Solution.  It's all about learning your LOs sleep cues.  I have DDs down and started to capitalize on them by asking if she was ready to go to bed.  Make a routine and talk it out with LO - they understand!!!

Just to note - I did do some CIO at 9 months when we went through a really bad sleep interruption but have used the sleep cues since 6 months with success.  Every once in a while I do have to let DD cry a little but it's usually less than 5 minutes.  And with the sleep cues and talking it out with DD she will now walk herself to the stairs when she's ready to go up to her room for bedtime most nights!
