Pregnant after a Loss

What Should I Ask My Doctor?

Tomorrow is my first appointment, and I'm trying to get a list of questions to ask my doctor.
I decided to ask your advice, since I miscarried back in February as some of you might know from my recent discussion.
I'm looking for some good questions to ask him that might help prevent another miscarriage.

I feel better prepared, because I know the signs and symptoms that  lead up to the last miscarriage, so this time I'd be able to see it sooner.
I've really been doing things a lot different then last time, eating way healthier, staying away from cleaning products, and I even changed all my shampoos, body soaps, etc. I guess I feel better too, because unlike my last time I'm having a lot of nausea and my belly feels bigger then the last time.

But if you could give me some basic questions to ask and some relating more to miscarriage that would be wonderful and so very helpful!

Re: What Should I Ask My Doctor?

  • Congrats. Unfortunately there isn't really anything that can stop a miscarriage from happening. Of course there is progesterone and then blood thinners etc. if you have a blood related condition.

For my first appointment it was important for me to know what to expect with the appointments going forward (how often would I get ultrasounds, what genetic screening tests were available etc.). Generally they will give you a packet with all that information but asking them about the appointments could help. Another thing I asked about was weight gain and supplements that I could take. Being PGAL can be really overwhelming so from day one I made small milestones for myself instead of thinking of it as 9 months.

  • Congrats! A lot depends on why you first miscarried. Most doctors aren't too concerned with one loss; mine didn't become concerned until the second (according to my doctor, every woman's that had 3 has had 2 has had 1). Sometimes, it's just a random problem with the pregnancy, not something that will reoccur.

In general, I'd ask if he felt there was anything to do improve your chances this time. It sounds like you're doing what you can on your end. If you don't know yet, ask if there was anything in your previous tests that could explain the loss that could help.

Otherwise, just try to stay positive (easier said than done!) and enjoy!

  • Thanks guys! @Jess123456 He put me on some medicine though it may or may not help. And instead he's having me come back earlier this time, 3 weeks. So far the ultrasound looked good, but that's happened before. He also recommended taking not just a prenatal but also Calcium. @stefani103 he said that too before that he doesn't get worried until it happens at least twice.
@shaddox16 when I miscarried, that Sunday I remember feeling like all of a sudden like I wasn't pregnant and then that Thursday I got bad cramps like I was having a period like your second one.

And we got to hear the heartbeat today, but it was really faint cause he/she is still so small. But the little spot on the screen you could see it flickering fast and she said that it was the heart beating though barely visible. It was amazing to say the least.
Also they said my due date it March 9th. Glad they made it only 3 weeks cause it'll put me going in at 9 weeks, which was when I miscarried last time. Praying and Hoping this one goes much better. :)
  • PP have covered a lot. Just wanted to say hooray for seeing that flicker! That's great :)
