thrush

Anyone have experience with thrush?  :-(  I posted about some weird shooting pains a few weeks ago and decided that since it wasn't getting worse and I've been having them since LO was a few weeks old, that it probably wasn't thrush.  I had my PP appt this week and told her about them.  She said it may or may not be thrush and to call if it continues.  There really isn't a way to determine if that is what it is, they just treat it.

My question is what others have experienced with thrush?  Anyone have pain as their only symptom?  I guess technically I have a second symptom, but I've been dealing with the itching since she was born and that is usually fine as long as I let them dry after feeding.  Is there a drawback to treating if it isn't thrush?  WWYD?  I BF for over a year with DS and never had anything like this.  I'm so frustrated.

ETA:  The shooting pains are mild and random.  Sometimes while I am feeding DD and sometimes just randomly throughout the day.

Re: thrush

  • I had thrush bad with dS1 and every time it would clear up, I would get it again. Finally, my dr suggested that I start taking a probiotic (acidophilis) every day and I took Diflucan while DS took nystatin and that got rid of it once and for all. Your LO could also have it without showing symptoms and unless you are both treated you'll keep passing it back and forth.

  • I got those pains too. I thought it was thrush but LC said probably not. They had me do the more natural treatment and only went to cream if needed. The more natural treatment worked. Here is what I did: 1 tbsp white vinegar to 8 oz water. Took a cotton ball and cleaned each side after feeding. I used a different cotton ball for each side. I patted each side dry and then used my milk to moisturize each breast after cleaning, then air dry.
  • Thanks for the responses ladies.  I called her back and she put me on Diflucan.  She said my LO didn't need to be treated since this is ductal thrush, but I checked with my pedi and they are treating LO with Nystatin too.  Hopefully this takes care of it and we don't have to continue treatment too long.
