Foley bulb induction success/fails

My OB who is going to be out of town this weekend and has made it clear that there is a window during that time that I won't get my VBAC because of the Dr on call during the day, is highly suggesting induction with a foley bulb. She wants to start it today or tomorrow morning at the latest to ensure that she is there to allow me all the chances for a VBAC on her watch. What was your experience with a foley, especially if you VBACd with one?

Re: Foley bulb induction success/fails

  • I went in at 40 weeks to be induced with a foley bulb and pitocin in an attempt to VBAC last week. I had the bulb inserted at 9:00 and pitocin started at 9:30. At 1:00 when my doctor removed the bulb, I was dilated 7 cm, going in that morning I was only 1 cm. My contractions were not bad, however they were in my low back and the tension has just eased up as of yesterday. By the time I was checked again at 5:30, I had made no progress since 1:30 and my contractions had basically stopped even on pitocin. I was exhausted (2 hours sleep the night before, up at 3:00 to be at the hospital by 5:00) and was in pain more from having to lay in the hospital bed all day than I was with the contractions themselves. I decided to go for a RCS. Thankfully I did because my delivering doctor said even if I would have made it to 10 cm she would never have made it to the birth canal with the angle of my uterus. All in all, I had high hopes of a successful VBAC once I progressed 6 cm in a matter of a few hours with the bulb. Good luck!

  • Thank you for sharing your experience.  This is one of my fears with the induction. I don't want to be confined to a bed for my entire labor.  F that!

  • I was induced with the bulb as well, it took a full 12 to dilate me to 6cm but I was allowed to move around my room as I wanted. They started the pit after the bulb was out. My contractions were also in my low back which was pretty awful tbh. I'm a FTM but I was able to deliver vaginally.
  • Is that the same thing as a balloon catheter? I think so, and if so mine my successful. I had a cervix ripener put in Monday night and by about noon on Tuesday I was dialated enough to have it inserted. Once inserted my contractions started within about half an hour and picked up speed and intensity quickly. After about 4 hours my water broke, it fell out and I was 5 or 6cm and was able to get my epi. By midnight or so (lost track of time) I was dialated 10cm and it was time to push!

  • I had a cervical ripener put in and then the Foley bulb, followed by pitocin. It helped me dilate to a 3, but I did not progress after that. I ended up with an emergency c section. I hope you have a good experience. Good luck!

  • Good luck! I hope you get your VBAC !
  • I was not a VBAC, but I did have a foley bulb after 2 doses of cytotec. It only took me from 1cm to 3cm with pitocin on board. However I know many people who have had more success with it than I.
    Good luck with your VBAC!
