Shellac manicure safe?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I am on my iPad and did a search and didn't see anything but I noticed it doesn't always search right on the iPad.

Anyways I am getting a manicure tomorrow and needed it to last at least a week. I was considering shellac and wanted to know if it was safe during pregnancy.  I have searched online and see mixed answers.  Anyone have any insight on this?  I was wondering if the removal was safe too.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Shellac manicure safe?

  • I don't know the answer but I don't advocate them at ALL.  I got one once and the chemicals destroyed my nail beds for almost a year.  I had to do constant Nailtiques and even then they were weak and flaky and peeling.

Okay actually based on that recap I would assume they are most likely not safe.

  • I've been getting them and my doctor doesn't have a problem with them, as long as the salon is well ventilated. I've gotten them for over 2 years with no issues.
  • I used them for over a year before I got pregnant (I have an at-home kit), and I LOVE them. I don't use the soaks to get rid of them--I drill them off with a nail drill, so I think that might be safer both on your nails and as far as fumes.

I opted NOT to do it during pregnancy, but to be honest, I think most of it was just not wanting to take the time to do them, then drill them off every 3 weeks (they seemed to last that long for me, but I'd have to paint over them the last week with a regular polish to fill in where they were growing). I was just done with them for a while. I'll probably go back to it after the baby's here, maybe, if I can find the time.

  • I get one every three weeks (shellac on hands, regular polish on toes) and by the end of that third week my nails look, admittedly, rough. But ob said it was fine and my salon is large and well ventilated. If you only need your polish to look good for a week, maybe don't get shellac? Could you just get a regular manicure or do your nails at home and touch up with polish you already have?

  • It was also really tough on my nails plus I'm not sure that UV light is good for you. I really like Sally Hanson Complete Manicure. I've had a lot of luck with that and X-Dry topcoat from Ulta for getting at least 5-7 days of passable polish (I only use very light pink so it doesn't show when it chips as much).

  • I've gotten it done while pregnant and it's been fine. My doctor said it was fine. Mine lasts about 10 days before it starts to look crappy.
  • Thanks ladies! I ended up getting the shellac but just an american manicure so it looks just like my natural nails. That way if I decide I just want to try to grow them out it won't look too bad.
  • I asked my doctor about this at the beginning of pregnancy. She said as long as it was well ventilated to the point that I could not smell anything then it would be safe. The chemicals in the polish are not harmful. I bought a home kit and use it in a well ventilated area or sit back and have my DH do it for me. I haven't had any reactions and baby is completely fine!
