Visiting from the 2nd Trimester Group!

Hi All,
I was just wondering for those who have older children and have gone through this before. What do you look for in a crib when trying to  pick on? Right now I'm looking at convertible cribs because I feel having one that can grow with the baby would be helpful, but is there anything else I should take into consideration? Does Brand matter? Height? etc.

Would love some feedback :)

Thanks!

  • I wanted a convertible crib; one and done.  I looked for one that would, hopefully, still be stylish in 15 years and one a teen boy would like (not hate, at least).

I also wanted a convertible that eventually became a full bed, not twin.

Though I love white cribs, it wouldn't translate well to a teen boy so I skipped it.

  • DS is now in his big bed (full size).  I am so glad we went convertible.  It made transitioning so easy, imo.

One word of advice, if it needs rails to convert buy now.  I waited and it was going to take 6 weeks no matter where I bought.  All the stores have them shipped directly from the manufacturer (for my brand at least).  Luckily, they were available via Amazon Prime but that was a fluke.  Not all finished were and I had the one finish they carried via Prime.
  • We have the Graco Lauren crib, which is convertible and seemed to be a very commonly bought and highly recommended crib at the time when I was pregnant with my first...it's served us well and was relatively inexpensive (I think like $130-150 ish?).  We will be using it again for baby #2

  • Inexpensive and non-toxic...I have two evil beavers who also hated the crib and preferred to sleep with me. I put the money I saved on an expensive crib towards expensive car seats.

Ditto ikea for the plain crib that converts to a toddler bed. DS1 is now in a low daybed that will eventually go into the basement for movie watching and DS2 is in the crib. Ikea sells teething rails if you don't buy the hardwood crib and ours has two height levels.

  • I think the models wobbling has more to do with how much the workers care about assembling it, and at IKEA just how many people shake it constantly than lack of sturdiness.

And I said I didn't think convertibles were worth it , but I think that has more to do with my desire to completely redo rooms every few years than anything

Absolutely. Our crib is an inexpensive convertible from Target. That thing is solid. Sometimes those display cribs are 5+ years old at "bargain" stores. After having hundreds of people play with them they're going to wiggle.
  • If you have an opinionated child like mine, convertible is a waste of money. We kept him in his crib until 20 months (?) and then he wanted a cheapo Cars plastic toddler bed! That was the only way he would stay in bed! And now he wants a bunker bed so he can have an "upstairs room." My 6 month DD is now using the crib so at least it hasn't gone to a waste.
  • My kid just turned 4 and she's STILL in her convertible crib (toddler day-bed setting). We're planning to move soon, so I've held out on a a buying the bed frame for her big-girl bed (of which we'll use the crib for a head and foot board). So I'd say we've gotten our $ worth.
