June 2014 Moms

For anyone putting of camping, etc because of the baby

Jump right in. Go camping, enjoy that music festival. It only gets more challenging.

After much debate, we took DD (18 months) and DS (3 weeks) to a 5 day outdoor music festival, camping (in a pop-up trailer). He was easy. I wore him all day, food on tap (BF). She was a bit more challenging. Insisting on running around, in the crowds, having to come up with meals, naptime, late bedtimes, etc. But seeing her amazement at the crowds, watching her dance to live music, having a little 4 year old come over and give her a glow stick (which blow her mind) then gave them both giggling to much they were falling over as they waved it around.

Yes it was scary going in, and there were definitely challenges, but it was so worth it.

Jump right in and take your LO camping if it's something you enjoy. It won't be easier next year. And you'll be glad you did.

Re: For anyone putting of camping, etc because of the baby

  • Going camping next week! There will be lots of people to love on her and snuggle her (we're going with family, so no creepy people to worry about yay!) and her pediatrician was totally cool with it and gave me a few tips. We're excited!

  • I am not a camper but I have been getting out of the house every day with my little one. This is my first but I agree it seems getting out with a sleepy newborn is the easiest it will get for a long time.

@CAMag‌ I'm a FTM so I had no clue of anything when I asked her, so I think they're pretty basic.

No sunscreen or bug spray, keep her covered with a muslin or light weight blanket while in carrier/stroller during the day to block the sun, or with mosquito netting at night. Make sure she has a hat on when not covered by the blanket. Watch for over heating. Try not to stress ourselves out about having a 3 week old camping because then we won't have fun.

  • We have a pop-up, a 20month old DS and a 2 wk old.... I would love to think we could pull off a camping trip right now, but it sounds like way to much work!!! Kudos momma for pulling it off and enjoying yourself and fun family time :)
  • My parents are trying to organize a camping trip for the end of the month, but one of our tent poles broke the last time we used it and we don't go camping enough to buy a new one. If my parents have room in their motorhome we might go, otherwise we'll probably just drive up for the day to get a break from the heat. Dh is looking forward to some mountain biking trails where he won't risk a face full of cactus if he eats it too, lol
  • Thanks sooo much for this post!!! We were wanting to go in a few weeks with our 10 yr old and will be 5 week old daughters. I was hesitant because all trips into town for shopping have been disastrous so far, but this is encouraging enough to give it some more thought. It's more of a road trip/camping - about 6 or 7 hour drive there so that is the scary part for me.
