1st Trimester

I'm SOOOOO Tired what do you use instead of caffeine?

Almost 6 weeks and completely wiped out!! I don't remember feeling like this the first time around lol... when does it stop?? Any advice for some natural pick me ups since there's no more caffeine?? I am trying to keep it a secret for now until I go to the doctor and get verification that everything is ok! Sooo that being said I need something to keep me awake at my desk haha! Hope you are all happy and healthy :)

  • I couldn't stand the taste of coffee with either pregnancy, so I did strong black tea instead. English breakfast tea was my favorite.

I'm a coffee girl but when pregnant it doesn't even sound good to me. I opt for Gatorade or powerade and it really helps!
  • I had to have black iced tea for the first few months because of aversions, but now I have an iced coffee every day. Have the caffeine. It's okay in moderation.

I don't normally drink much caffeine so I was looking for other options but I might just have to start drinking a cup or 2! Thanks for your input ladies!
  • Coffee!! Im so not giving it up..
  • Just found out I'm 4w5d, and I got the same question, been cutting coffee for 4 days and I feel like craps.... :( can't concentrated at all. Maybe I will crave in and give up on cutting caffeine soon... :/
  • All I could stomach in my first trimester was coke.. Flat coke to be exact... And my ds turned out fine :)

  • A big cup of coffee drowned in flavored creamer starts off most of my days, including when I'm pregnant.

  • Caffeine. Definitely. I used to drink almost a pot of coffee a day (pre-BFP)- now I have a cup a day and I feel fine. There will be a lot of foods and beverages you might start out not having because you've heard they are bad, but there's a good chance you will take in a lot of them by the time 42 weeks rolls around. :)

Drink the coffee. As stated above a conservative safe amount is 200 mg per day. A typical cup of coffee is about 95 mg. Just keep it 2 cups or less for the day. On a side note, caffeine can increase the risk for miscarriage ( mostly in the first tri) in moderate/ high amounts. I would suggest talking to your doc to discuss your risks of miscarriage, ie previous m/s, age etc. There is always a risk with anything, be smart and do your research.
  • Apples & second the gatorade (yes, it's sugar water but it helps)

  • I don't drink coffee ( I did a little before pregnancy but none now) not because of the "risks" of caffeine but I find it makes me jittery now, even one cup and I feel ill my heart races and I get shaky.

Someone suggested for me to take barley greens for natural energy but I haven't asked my doctor yet.

I find that going for walks throughout the day (flexible job so I can do that) makes me feel less fatigued and on days I just can't get through the day, I close my office door and put my head down for a 15 min cat nap. I know this isn't possible for everyone but its the only way I can finish my day at work sometimes.

  • I've been going with some lower-caffeine teas at home (Chai, etc).  It at least mimics the hot cup of coffee in the morning.  But mostly, I've just cut back.

  • I drink plexus slim its most naturl!
  • I also drink one cup in the morning but it doesn't get me through the day. By lunch time I'm ready to curl up under my desk ~O)

  • This might sound weird and something you would not expect but try going for little power walks when you can. It gives me an extra boost of energy during the day and helps me sleep at night.
  • I have one cup of coffee when I truly need it (and my morning sickness isn't triggered by it) and then switch to water the rest of the day. If I couldn't have my caffeine, I have no idea what I would do.
  • While yes I totally agree that cup of caffeine a day is safe this time around its giving me horrible anxiety followed by headaches.... Any other remedies?? I do drink Gatorade as well but to control my nausea.
  • If I'm nauseous and coffee sounds horrid I usually sip on a can of Pepsi to help settle my sick stomach. There is some caffeine. Granted, it is a lot of sugar but the caffeine and whatever helps my stomach is worth the sugar and not vomiting at work lol
  • You're still early enough that you don't even share a blood supply with the baby yet so caffeine it up!  I drink a coffee in the AM and sometimes soda in the PM.  I'm going to switch to tea, though, because coffee makes me feel queasy now.  If you're really wanting to avoid caffeine the best trick I've found is to bite into a lemon.  Talk about a wake up!

  • I gave up caffeine before TTC for other reasons and started putting chia seeds in my drinks as my alternative (or you can put them in yogurt, smoothies, etc.) I think it's working pretty well. Has anyone else tried Chia seeds and do you think they work? I get them on amazon.com
  • Perhaps give chocolate a try. Cocoa does have small amounts of caffeine and the sweetness may give you the burst of energy you need.
  • Plexus has helped me! Lots of amazing energy and natural!
  • Chia seeds!! Great idea!! I use hemp seeds and didn't even think to use then in the am. DUH. They have tons of protein too

That stuff is complete crap. It's sugar water.

    -sips Powerade-

Get the hell outta here with your negative opinions. Sheeeeeeeeeesh.
    =))

Haha! I do have a natural alternative to powerade if you want but honestly there are SOOO many worse things that people consume a little powerade ain't gonna kill you! (she says as she sips her cherry limeade from sonic LOL)

  • Drink the caffine. Dont go overboard but up to 200 mg per day is perfectl safe.
