New here: Question about Wilbarger Brushing Protocol

Hi all,

My 2.5 year old son has SPD, and his new OT has wanted us to try this brushing protocol.  After explaining it and practicing, I thought I had it down.  However, my son flips out at the sight of the brush and in my attempt to brush him with it, he had a complete melt down.  For those who have tried this technique, is it just a matter of letting him lead the way and not forcing it?  the OT said to give it a good 3 weeks before we move on to something else. But I mean, I cannot even put it on the table without him crying.  Does it get better?

Thanks!

Re: New here: Question about Wilbarger Brushing Protocol

  • My oldest DD is tactile-defensive, and when we first started OT one of the therapists wanted us to do it, but I didn't feel like it was the right approach for DD.

  • DS2's first OT had us do it every 2 hours excluding when he was sleeping. He hated it. She wanted us to push through it and said he would get used to it. We did it for about 5-6 weeks. I didn't notice any difference with him and he still hated it, screaming bloody murders, throwing himself everywhere. So, DH and I decided to stop. The OT still thought we should be doing it but honestly, it was exhausting, and without noticing any benefits made me know it was the right decision to stop. DS2 got a new OT a month ago and she isn't as into the brushing as his other one was. She has brought it up once and just said we could if we wanted to.
